Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 4 Pro Limited Edition Review

Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 4 Pro Limited Edition
Average Reviews:

First, be forewarned that this soundcard/external box system requires an extra power connection inside your computer. If you do not have a spare power connection, then the external box is useless--and that means no MIDI connections (no keyboard), no mike, etc. etc.
Second, the card itself. Uses a 32-bit audio engine. It is widely believed that the more bits, the better. However, some sources say that the bits above 16 are mainly noise, with some increased definition. At any rate, recording or playing soundfonts with this soundcard produces very harsh-sounding instruments. This may be what you want if you're writing rock music. If you're writing chamber music, choose a different card.

ASUS Xonar Essence STX Virtual 7.1 Channels PCI Express Interface 124 dB SNR / Headphone AMP Card Review

ASUS Xonar Essence STX Virtual 7.1 Channels PCI Express Interface 124 dB SNR / Headphone AMP Card
Average Reviews:

I bought this because I use a nice pair of Sennheiser headphones on my PC and wanted something better than my sound blaster Audigy 2 ZS which had a buggy user-interface and seemed to have weak bass response. I also wanted to be able to switch between headphones and powered speakers without unplugging anything.
Pros: First, and most importantly, this does sound much better than the Audigy 2 ZS. Plus, the user interface is nice and doesn't crash like the SB used to (I use WinXP Pro SP3). It's easy to switch from headphones to speakers without much hassle or unplugging anything, so that's nice. It can be adjusted for even high-end low-impedance headphones. I also has a real 1/4" headphone connector so you don't need an adapter for your expensive headphones. It comes with an RCA-to-headphone plug so you can connect your PC speakers.
Cons: You can't have the RCA connection and the headphone connection active at the same time. It's not a big deal, but it would have been nice. It needs an extra power connection. It doesn't draw crazy power like a video card, but keep it in mind if you are already pushing the limits of your power supply. The configuration app that runs in the background uses more ram than the SB app did, but it doesn't crash, so I guess it's worth it.

Creative Labs SB0570 PCI Sound Blaster Audigy SE Sound Card Review

Creative Labs SB0570 PCI Sound Blaster Audigy SE Sound Card
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There have been a few interesting reviews for this product here on Amazon. Some are evidently due to lack of experience with computers. I will just list a few things you might want to know.
1. The card was very easy to install and update. As stated in the instructions.. Install the card, then boot up. When it detects the card and wants to search for drivers.. hit cancel. Then when your desktop loads, insert the installation cd and install the software. This gets you the bonus material on the cd as well as the drivers. This includes an automated update system for driver and software updates. You can schedule it to check for (I recommend) once a month, but run it once when you first install. This automatically updates your drivers for you. Very easily done. No searching the net, no messing with anything. Just click the options you want.
2. Sound cards in general. Most computers packaged these days come with onboard (chipped directly to the motherboard) sound cards. This is a terrible idea. The onboard sound card
a. is using your system resources and will could be causing conflicts or bottlenecks that lessen gaming and other intensive cpu usage and
b. not a real sound card and therefore generally a real pain (usually impossible) to upgrade the drivers on.
I am a gamer from ancient history of computer gaming and can tell you this.. sound card drivers not being updated are the cause of just as many, if not more problems crashing other programs than anything else on your computer save the video drivers.
Finally.. as for the sound. The digital 7.1 is awesome. I really notice a difference and have enjoyed the performance of this card very much.

I would not classgy this card as "Plug and Play". Windows will see it once it is plugged into a slot, but it probably won't work out of the box that easily.
The first thing you shoudl know is that you need to uninstall or disable all other sound card drivers.
The next thing is that you need to read the manual which comes on the CD with the drivers. Each speaker setup has you plug into the card differently. You need to get it right to make it work. Also be aware that because the manual is on the disk, they son't give any usable written instructions in the box.
Next when you install the drivers, it will only install for once kind of speaker system. If you later upgrade from a 2.0 to a 4.0, 5.1 or 7.1 system, or if you change the speakers at all you most likely will have to run the setup again.
So, this card is particular about getting everything right. Still, I paid less than $25 (including shipping) and for that amount of money it works great! Once you make the card happy it will work great!

Creative PCMCIA Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Notebook Sound Card Review

Creative PCMCIA Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Notebook Sound Card
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was very pleased with the Audigy 2 ZS Platinum card I got for my desktop PC, so I was excited when I learned Creative was producing a PCMCIA version for notebooks. This is a great sounding card with some nice features- but there are some other things you should probably be aware of before you buy one for yourself.
First off, here are the good things about the card:
- Reliable, good sounding card with nice optional effects (EQ, reverb, etc.)
- The headphone jack has a cool red light inside it, making it easy to locate the jack without having to squint around looking for the right one.
- Optical and analog in/out, and a special cable for connecting to 5.1 and 7.1 speaker setups.
- When no sound is playing, this card is silent. I mean so silent that two times I actually thought there was something wrong until a sound actually played. It's very impressive, but takes some getting used to if you're accustomed to always hearing some hiss or hum in your headphones when you're plugged into a computer.
But here are the things that may not be obvious until you actually own one:
- When the card is plugged in, you cannot use your notebook's built-in speakers; you MUST use headphones or external computer speakers, and only the audio connections on the card itself will work. If you normally use your notebook with headphones or external speakers, this won't be an issue for you, but if you're used to playing games on the notebook's built-in speakers, your behavior will have to change.
- The card comes with no printed documentation whatsoever, other than a little insert saying that you can't use your built-in speakers. To install the card, just plug it in, then insert the driver CD when the Add New Hardware wizard asks you to. After the drivers are installed, you can run the software installation off the CD. (There is an electronic user's guide with installation instructions, but you can't install that until after the card and drivers are already installed!)
- Note that you do not have to disable your built-in audio or uninstall any drivers. In fact, you shouldn't because you'll have to use your old integrated audio if you ever need to use the computer speakers. When you plug in the Audigy card it automatically becomes your notebook's default sound device, and when you remove the card the integrated audio works again. It's pretty seamless and reliable. You probably shouldn't do it while a game's running though.
- I have learned that the card does not plug in to some notebooks correctly. (The thick end of the card that has audio connectors prevents you from pushing the card in all the way.) Check out the forums on www.soundblaster.com for more info- I think Creative is mailing adapters to people who experience this problem. (I have a ThinkPad T42p by the way, and I didn't have any trouble.)
- If you're thinking of getting this card as a way to improve gaming performance, don't. Yes, technically, by offloading sound generation tasks from integrated audio to the Audigy card your computer frees some of its own resources for other things, but unfortunately this does not translate into any noticeable difference in gameplay. (In fact, if you're not prudent in your selection of which of the bundled programs to install, you may end up HURTING both performance and reliability instead of helping it.) The real power of the Audigy is its ability to transform audio with digital effects and to deliver high bitrate multi-channel sound. About the only ways to really improve performance on most notebooks are to upgrade RAM, get a faster hard drive, and disable all services/startup items that you don't need.
- If you're like me and you like running a LEAN system for maximum performance, don't be fooled by Creative's "drivers only" option. If you don't install at least the Creative Volume Control, Creative Speaker Settings, and Creative EAX Console, your ability to use this card will be severely limited. (It's the same way with the desktop Audigy.) I ended up doing a full install of all the bundled software and then used Mike Lin's free Startup Control Panel to disable the following startup items: CTDVDDET, CTPerformanceUtility, Creative Detector, and Creative MediaSource. Plus I had to manually uninstall the idiotic MediaSource Go! launch bar that attached itself to the top of my desktop- I couldn't make that one go away by editing my startup items. (The software also installs a service called "Creative Service for CDROM Access" but I'm not sure what it does yet.)
- Note that without the Creative Speaker Settings program installed you will probably not be able to use your computer's built-in volume and mute buttons (again, they're normally tied to the integrated audio). Make sure to check the "Synchronize with Control Panel" option to get that functionality back.

Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy MP3+ Sound Card Review

Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy MP3+ Sound Card
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Audigy card produces excellent sound, if at a fair additional cost over the Live! series. This card has been gone over well under Audigy Gamer in terms of its gaming capabilities, (the Gamer and the MP3+ are virtually identical cards with differing software packages) so I'll talk more about the MP3+ here and its music software... While I haven't had much experience with EAX games, some of the ambience effects (called "Environment" effects in the Surround Mixer, including concert hall, theater, etc.) when used with music are actually realistic and useable in certain situations (unlike many of the ambience effects included on your average stereo minisystem..). More often, though, you'll use the Advanced EQ effects (Rock, Techno, Classical, etc.), not the Environment effects, for listening to music. In general, I've found these to be appropriate for the genres they describe and better than some equalizer presets given with other software; I've disabled the Windows Media Player equalizer and use the Creative one instead. I believe the mixer with all the effects is the same on the Gamer and the MP3+.
While I don't have a whole lot of experience with different mixing software, Mixmeister is excellent and useful, while Mixman seems to me more like a toy. Mixmeister is great for mixing party music-- you can make the transitions sound surprisingly professional. Put two songs next to each other, turn on beat mixing, perhaps fine tune its automatic settings somewhat (very easy), and have the computer slightly speed or slow the two songs so that by the time they overlap their beats are synchronized, so people don't need to adjust while dancing. You can also use it to speed or slow whole songs-- add a little more energy to a song by speeding it up a few beats per minute. The Audigy chip on the card handles this, I believe; at any rate, I've noticed no slowdown on my computer with any dynamic tempo shifting.
Mixman allows you to remix music yourself, techno style, and record your work as MP3, but in my opinion it comes with too few tracks and effects to really be useful, and it seems to me you may only be able to do 20 MP3 exports; I haven't checked with Creative Labs to see if there is something you can do to lift this limit, but frankly I haven't once thought it worth my time to do so, either.
I don't know if the rest of the player software that comes with the Audigy MP3+ also comes with the Audigy Gamer, but in general, it's hit or miss. Creative PlayCenter is harder to use and less attractive than Windows Media Player or RealJukebox; Oozic player is even harder to use, and while 3-D visualizations are far cooler than anything WMP or Winamp can do, I wouldn't switch for them, and they need a pretty fast video card to play without having skips in the video. IMRadio is by far the best internet radio app I've seen, but it is also a free download from the internet.
To comment on the sound quality of the actual card: Very impressive. When hooked to a Klipsch Provision 4.1 audio system, even at the highest levels, there was a very slight hissing, but that was all (and with a Klipsch 4.1, if any sound signal ever did play with the system on max, expect your ears to fall off in protest). The sound card will also play without skipping regardless of how much you run on the system-- at least, i've never run into a problem, which i used to do with my old Montego II OEM version.
Overall, extremely high-quality card, and a worthwhile upgrade. I've been critical of the software, but you're getting the card for the card's sake. The Audigy card is one of the best, and both versions come with an excellent mixer app. When deciding which to get, Gamer or MP3+, if you like the games that come with it, get a gamer. If you want to change song speeds (more fun than it sounds), get an MP3+. If neither, flip a coin.

Creative Labs Sound Blaster PCI 512 Sound Card Review

Creative Labs Sound Blaster PCI 512 Sound Card
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I chose the Sound Blaster PCI 512 sound card for use with a low power, 5 speaker surround sound system (Cambridge/Creative Labs.) I mainly use this card for gaming and listening to music.
The card has separate front/rear channel plugs for surround sound speakers, a microphone plug, and comes bundled with a decent amount of software. The control software contains controls for "Environmental Audio", which applies different affects to audio output. The most entertaining component of the bundled software has to be the keyboard, which lets you play with a few hundred different instruments and effects- very fun if you don't have a real keyboard to play with.
I have not noticed any flaws in this sound card's performance, and I have not encountered any bugs in the drivers or control software.
This is a great card for anyone looking for a simple, affordable option for gaming and music. Without a high-quality speaker system, you will probably not notice the difference between this sound card and more expensive ones such as the Sound Blaster Live!

Don't listen to the negative reviews. I have XP and you just insert the card,
put the cd in the drawer and its a very basic setup. Only a few minutes.
Only cost me $6. Doesn't need an instruction booklet! What an
improvement over the built-in 'Realtek'! Anyone who can't do this simple
install, has no business with their hands inside a PC.

Sabrent SND-P8CH 8-Channel 7.1 High-Performance Surround Sound 3D PCI Sound Card Controller
Average Reviews:

I purchased this sound card because I was getting static through the mic on my onboard sound. I was looking for something inexpensive that would give me a clean mic input and clean sound. It has certainly worked on all accounts.
Installation was easy enough, although I would recommend that you just ignore the drivers disc. It was easy enough to go online and find the drivers I needed, and after a couple reboots it was working fine.
I will say that I'm not really pushing the limits of the card, I use either a pair of stereo desktop speakers with a subwoofer, or my headphones with the mic. I haven't tried setting up anything close to a 7.1 setup. Then again, that's why I wanted an inexpensive card - I wasn't going to spend $100 for a sound card to listen to through headphones!
I give it four stars because of the drivers - it wasn't hard but it wasn't easy either. Overall, this card does exactly what I was looking for - a no frills sound card that gives me clean sound.

My hard drive crashed in my six-year-old Dell Dimension 8400, Pentium 4, 2 Gb of RAM. The OEM Creative SoundBlaster was a "special" model placed in Dell computers. The drivers were no longer available. I still wanted the computer to have sound but did not want to spend a lot of money for an older machine. This sound card by StarTech is perfect. The sound was much better than I expected. In fact, I'd have to say it sounded better than the SoundBlaster ever did. Setup was extremely easy. The software on the CD-Rom is very simple to use. I had no problems running it on my Windows XP Pro operating system. I would definitely consider other products from StarTech

I bought this specifically for a Windows 7 system. Win 7 automatically recognizes the card and installs associated drivers. I made the mistake of attempting to install the disk that came with it and it caused a reboot and required a repair to windows startup followed by manual uninstall of the portion of the software which installed; don't do that. The card works just fine when you let windows detect it and install its own drivers, just don't bother with the software disk.

I just bought this card and I wasn't expecting a lot, but I had to say it definitely improves the sound. I have some regular speakers and usually I use my Koss PortaPro headphones or a pair of Sennheiser CX300 earbuds in my computer, and both sound much better now. I'm using windows 7 64-bits and a friend told me that this card was not compatible, but gladly it does (I get the drivers from Creative official website). Excellent card, for $24 I couldn't ask more.
