Kensington FM Transmitter/Auto Charger for iPod (White) Review

Kensington FM Transmitter/Auto Charger for iPod (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bottom line, unacceptable for me, although it might possibly work in your car. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and I drive a Mercedes E class. I also tried this unit in a friend's Nissan Sentra with identical results to those reported here.
This unit is, in essence, a tiny FM radio station that uses the connecting wire for the unit as the FM transmission antenna. In theory, this mini station transmits from inside your car to your car's FM antenna where the signal is picked up and listened to on your car's radio like any other radio station. This unit allows you to transmit on the frequencies 88.1 MHz through 88.7 MHz inclusive and 107.1 MHz through 107.7 MHz inclusive. In my area at least half of these frequencies are "blank" which I define as tuning to the frequency and receiving only white noise and no trace of a signal from any station.
I hooked up the unit, which was easy, and leaving out a lot of experimentation, I got no meaningful reception in the 88.x MHz range. I tried the upper reaches of the band in the 107.x MHz range and got the unit to work as well as it would work at 107.5 MHz.
I distinguish between two problems: the quality of the FM transmission, and the sound quality once the signal is received by the car's radio. For my car, the FM transmission is simply unworkable. There is a constant, obtrusive, background noise which I would describe as white noise; this noise can be lessened by moving the unit around but not eliminated to the point that it is not obtrusive. The general effect was as if listening to a distant FM station where the signal is starting to fade out to the point that background noise is coming through and interfering with the sound. I tried a number of different placements of the unit all over the car. There were moments - but only moments - where the unit worked flawlessly. In a way those few moments only made the overall effect more frustrating since they seemed to indicate that this technology could work but it wasn't working for me.
The sound quality, apart from the background noise, was quite good, at least as good as an FM transmission. Fussy as I am about sound, I found the sound quality - as separate from the noisy transmission - to be perfectly fine and as good as any other in-car sound source. This is one of those really frustrating situations where we all want to buy this product if only it would work.
How do we reconcile the differing reviews of these products - some of which are downright laudatory and some, like mine, highly critical? I think the difference must relate to the individual auto's FM system. In different cars the antenna will be in different locations relative to the placement of the unit; further, the FM signal shielding provided by the car's metal frame will vary according to the car's construction and the relative location of the car's antenna. Also, specifications like noise rejection and signal strength sensitivity will vary depending on the type and quality of the radio provided in various makes of car. So, my suggestion would be: 1) reviewers state the make and year of your car to create an information resource; 2) find a way to try this thing out before you buy it: if it works in your car, and it probably won't, you will be happy.

2. Reboot your computer
3. Connect one end of the USB cable into the adapter, the other into your computer
4. Connect the adapter to your monitor and turn the monitor on
5. If you monitor has multiple sources, choose the correct source (DVI, Video, etc.)
That's it! It automatically extends the desktop to the new monitor. Use Display Settings for further configuration, such as placement of the new monitor (on the right or the left), screen resolution, etc.
We got dual monitors at work about a year ago and it's been rather painful to work (or play) at home with a mere one monitor. I wish I had bought this a year ago!

2.5mm Mobile Headset To PC Converter Review

2.5mm Mobile Headset To PC Converter
Average Reviews:

This is the only place in the *world* I could find this type of adapter. Radio Shack apparently used to have one (Multimedia Headset Y-Cable, 42-2428) but discontinued it. I tested this item with a mono cell headset (3 conductors on the 2.5mm plug) and a stereo cell headset (4 conductors on the 2.5mm plug). It worked with both, but with the stereo headset, sound only comes through the right headphone channel. Sound records identically on both channels through the microphone however. Using this adapter I could use my cell phone headset to both listen to music and place Skype calls on my PC. The sound quality of both was fine. This is a very useful item to save having to buy a separate headset for VoIP calls.

7.1 Channel USB External Sound Card Audio Adapter Review

7.1 Channel USB External Sound Card Audio Adapter
Average Reviews:

device didnt come with the management software
Doesn't really give full compliment of audio, most of the music played through it sounds like its missing one side of the stereo track. When plugged into a real set of speakers, audio is drowned out by buzz, as if the grounding is faulty. Output jack has to be jiggled to find just the right "sweet spot" in order for any sound to come out at all.
Its incredibly cheap, but if you need a long term solution, get a real external soundcard

USB Phone Adapter for Skype, MSN, Yahoo, USB VOIP Interface connects your home phone to network Review

USB Phone Adapter for Skype, MSN, Yahoo, USB VOIP Interface connects your home phone to network
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wanted an extra Skype phone near my easy chair where I do a lot of my work and where I have a laptop. But I didn't want to buy another Skype phone as I have two already. So I thought I'd try this cheap adapter.
I was blown away! I didn't hook it to the land line as I have a land line phone nearby. I also didn't want to take a chance on making LD calls on the land line.
So I hooked up a phone I bought at a garage sale for a quarter. I set the Skypemate software to recognize the USB port first, not the land line, which is the default.
It worked like a dream. I can make regular calls or use the software. When I pick up the phone, Skype pops up. Really neat. I haven't received a call on it yet so don't know how that will work. But I mostly use it to call out anyway.
The really "great" news is that when I made a call to a regular phone, the sound was above par --- better than a regular call. Unlike another reviewer, I found the quality of the call far superior to a cell phone and equal to or better than a regular land line call. Whether that was due to my Internet connection or PC or phone, I don't know. I do know I tried two phones before I used this one. The first phone didn't give good quality. So it could be you'll need to try a couple phones. This one I'm using is just a cheap old regular phone.
I highly recommend this adapter to anyone who uses Skype or any VOIP that it will work with.
I bought the phone from Cable4Less and I recommend you do the same. Their prices are the best and I can tell you from experience their help is above average and "very" fast. Customer support is an area I really rate on and if it's bad, I'll tell the world. There's no excuse for bad customer support. But if you buy from Cable4Less, you'll be happy. They'll do right by you. (I have no financial interest in Cable4Less.)
I highly recommend this product.
Update: I've not been able to get the adapter to work with both Skype and the Land Line as advertised. As a Skype phone only, it's perfect. But, at least in my case using a standard, basic telephone (not cordless) the landline won't work along with Skype. It may be my unit is defective. But that's my experience thus far.
Update: I switched phones to try and get the adapter to work on both the land line and Skype. Instead of using my trusty SW Bell desk phone, I used the quarter phone and hooked both up to it. And, it works fine.
So my conclusion is that the adapter is somewhat particular in the telephone you use. That said, I'm looking forward to really enjoying this. By the way, it's easy to tell which line you're on.

Griffin Technology iMic USB Audio Device Review

Griffin Technology iMic USB Audio Device
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Like many others before me, I bought this unit to digitize some old audio cassettes. (In my case, old radio shows from 1930-1950.) I initially tried this with a cassette player and the analog audio input on my Mac but the results were disappointing; there was a tremendous amount of humming in the finished audio. My friends at Tekserve recommended this device instead.
Installation is just a matter of plugging it into the USB port; the Mac required no drivers and saw the device as another audio device. QuickTime Player, GarageBand, iMovie, the Sound preference panel and Griffin's own "Final Vinyl" application immediately recognized the device.
I connected my tape player to the iMic, launched Griffin's "Final Vinyl" application, and got to work. The results were stunning, like night and day when compared to the analog recording I'd previously made. There was absolutely no hum to be heard. I experimented with other audio cassettes and detected no hum, static, or other problem that could be attributed to the iMic device.
The device has two standard mini stereo ports (audio in and out), and a switch on the side to change between line input and microphone input (this is important -- if the switch is in the wrong place you will be disappointed with the results). It also includes a mini-to-RCA adapter cable which I thought was a nice addition. The USB cable is rather short (about one foot long) and is hardwired to the unit so don't break it.
As was previously pointed out, the "Final Vinyl" software needs work and is inarguably the weakest part of this package. (Truthfully, if Griffin DIDN'T bundle "Final Vinyl" with the iMic I would have given this a five-star rating.) It is a COMPLETELY bare-bones application. I get the strong impression that "Final Vinyl" started life as a quick hack that a programmer wrote up in a couple of hours so that they could test the iMic device, but someone in Griffin's Marketing department saw it and decided to make it part of the package. It is not very intuitive (highlighting a segment of audio and hitting the DELETE key does nothing, forcing you to go into a menu to select DELETE which also has no keyboard shortcut), offers almost nothing in terms of audio editing capabilities, is surprisingly slow, and it crashes quite a bit. (Although I think Griffin knows this; when you relaunch the app after it crashed, it remembers the audio you had previously recorded and offers you the option of using that data or starting from scratch.) Fortunately the app doesn't crash (*knock on wood*) when importing audio; the crashing seems to happen when you're trying to open or save a file AND do something else with another application at the same time.
The only other thing about this unit that bugs me is its awkward design. It's about the size of a silver dollar and perhaps 3/8" thick. The short cable means you can't keep it plugged into the back of your machine and be able to easily access it, particularly if your machine is on the floor (like mine is). The rounded shape of the unit means you can't set it on edge and tuck it into an otherwise unused bit of space, and you can't easily attach it to your computer (i.e., with a zip-tie). I have mine plugged into the front USB port on my computer with the cable looped over the handle but it's an awkward placement at best, and I have to move the cable over whenever I want to open the CD drawer. It's not REALLY horrible since I'll likely rarely use the iMic once these tapes have been digitized, but I think Griffin could have done a little more to make this unit a little more elegant.

The Griffin Technology 9066-IMIC2 iMic/USB Audio Interface, the original USB audio adapter, lets you connect virtually any microphone or sound input device to any Mac or PC system with a USB port. iMic supports both mic and line level inputs via a selectable switch, and has a variable level output for connecting speakers or headphones. The iMic really shines as the essential tool for converting your old LPs and tapes into MP3s and CDs. Griffin's audio recording software, Final Vinyl for Mac OS X (provided for free exclusively to iMic owners), makes recording old records and tapes very easy with its advanced features, including waveform-based cue editing and built-in 10-band EQ. You can use Final Vinyl to equalize LPs without having to connect a turntable to a pre-amp. iMic is also an ideal solution for your podcasting needs and for use with GarageBand, iMovie, and Final Cut Pro.

Syba SD-CM-UAUD USB Stereo Audio Adapter, C-Media Chipset, RoHS Review

Syba SD-CM-UAUD USB Stereo Audio Adapter, C-Media Chipset, RoHS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the platonic form of a USB sound card. It works well in Windows XP and Mac OS X, has clearly labeled inputs, decent build quality, and has no unnecessary features, at a very affordable price. We bought it to use stereo jack headsets with Skype on Mac computers that don't have microphone jacks, and this adapter fits our needs exactly. This also resolves a problem we have when using Windows XP on our iMacs - Apple doesn't provide the correct sound drivers in Boot Camp, and the built-in iMac headphone jack doesn't work in Windows - the USB adapter works perfectly.
In Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 (tested in both) the device is identified as a "C-Media USB Audio Device". Installation was plug-and-play, the device was immediately recognized after plugging in, although I had to manually select it as the input/output device in the Sound preference pane. After selecting it and setting the input levels, OS X and Skype both automatically switched back and forth between Built-in Audio and C-Media USB when it was plugged/unplugged, and remembered the input levels last used on each (although not the systemwide output levels).
A sticker on the outside of the box identifies the chipset as the C-Media CM119, and it is a USB 2.0 device.
Physically, the construction seems plenty robust for a $10 device. The mic and headphone jacks are color coded in standard pink and green, and have large white icon labels that are easily identified. The case is darkly translucent black, and a green LED inside blinks when sound is being transmitted or received, and otherwise glows steady when plugged in but not in active use. It is too thick to plug into the USB ports on the edges of the 2007-2009 silver aluminum iMac keyboards. On our aluminum iMacs it has to be plugged into the back, where it doesn't block any other ports (as long as other connected USB devices are not also thick). However, it can easily be connected to the USB ports next to the cord on the rear of the older white Mac keyboards from 2003-2007.

Drawbacks?
The microphone input is mono, which is fine for voice headsets, but probably not great for pro audio recording, which probably wouldn't be done with a $10 device anyway. I could do without the blinking light, but as it will be out of sight when connected behind my iMac, it's not a big deal.
Comparison
We also bought the cousin to this product, the 7.1 Channel USB External Sound Card Audio Adapter with external volume control buttons. The 7.1 version uses the same CM119 chipset, but was inferior to this Syba model in all respects.
- The 7.1 model has a thicker body, making it more likely to block other USB ports.
- The buttons on the 7.1 feel very flimsy, and are mostly useless as they only change the computer's software volume settings.
- The 7.1 inputs are not correctly color coded (yellow and black) and the icon labels are tiny and hard to distinguish.
- The 7.1 is identified by OS X as "Unknown USB Audio device"
- The particular 7.1 unit we received was assembled with its USB port slightly angled off-center.
The only supposed improvements in the 7.1 version are the flaky exterior buttons and that it comes with a mini-CD of Xear "virtual surround sound" software for Windows only. Surely you could use some other "3D sound simulation software" with this Syba unit, and there are several reports of the buttons/housing breaking on the 7.1 version. I strongly recommend avoiding the 7.1 model at all costs, this one is simpler and sturdier.

StarTech.com DP2HDMI DisplayPort to HDMI Video Adapter Converter Review

StarTech.com DP2HDMI DisplayPort to HDMI Video Adapter Converter

I got this cable for my Alienware M15x laptop. I was surprised it'd didn't come with an HDMI and was not familiar with displayport. I got this cable so I could watch my movie files while on vacation. The adapter works great and is very well made. The part that plugs into the data port has a positive locking system which is nice. The quality is also very good and it feels substantial and well put together.
Additional info. For me (as mentioned in the comments below), in order to send the audio through the HDMI cable, you will need to get into the "sound and Audio devices" of the control panel and change the sound playback Default Device to the displayport cable. If you don't the sound will come out the laptop speakers or whatever speakers you have hooked up to the laptop.
Just a quick update. I've been using this cable on and off for a while and it still works just fine. More and more hotels have nice TV's with HDMI in plugs so I can play my movies from my laptop which is nice.
I just wanted to mention that although the photo of the adapter may look like a USB at first glance IT'S NOT, it IS a DisplayPort male end you are seeing. This is a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, just like the title says. I see too many people giving this item bad reviews because they made the mistake of ordering it thinking it is a USB to HDMI. It isn't. The title and description is correct. I'm not saying I've never ordered the wrong thing by mistake but I can't say I'd blame Amazon for my mistake.

Manhattan Usb Game Port Adapter Review

I was looking for a converter for my CH Flight Pro which used an old DB-15 plug, and well is no longer used anymore.
I saw this, and was a little pricey bot ordered it and it works great.
It converted the joystick to USB and Vista detected it and installed drivers and was up and running in no time.
It has a switch on it to configure for four different joysticks makers and different axis and such.
It has a good build quality and over has a clean look and doesnt look cheap.
One thing though, older games will not detect it because they were not made to detect USB joy sticks, games like F22 Rapter and those games.
It should work fine in Flight Sim games though.

USB 2.0 to 3.5mm Female Audio Stereo Microphone Adapter Review

USB 2.0 to 3.5mm Female Audio Stereo Microphone Adapter
Average Reviews:

Coolest and best thing ever! It even works with the iPhone headset that has built in microphone!
Few nags:
1- it's about half a mm too thick so when you plug it to the mac keyboard it makes it wobble a bit - but it's easily fixable by putting a piece of paper on the other side.
2- You have to manually change system preference settings to play from device when you use it.
All in all, I feel like I discovered gold as I always wanted to have an audio jack coming from my keyboard so the audio wire coming from my iMac doesn't lay on top of the keyboard and also means that I can lay back on my chair without pulling the cable out.
