I own a 2009 Honda Accord Ex-L w/o Nav because Honda charges a ridiculously high price for their navigation package and I knew I could do better for cheaper with aftermarket. This unit does an ok job with its navigation, but not as good as other units. The alpine has about 6 million points of interest compared to 12 million of other units so if you are searching for a location without its address, it could pose potential problems. As far as map updates, I doubt it. I have heard from Alpine owners of past and they still haven't released a map update for previous models. A feature I would have liked to seen is the ability to send an address to your headunit from googlemaps which would have negated the need for map updates in my opinion. The turn by turn navigation is nice, the voice is not annoying and it has an adjustable setting that controls how loud the voice comes in over your music. Another feature I like is being able to see your next turn even if you are on the audio screen.
Where this unit shines, in my opinion, is its ipod integration.
**Disclaimer: Be forewarned if you have an ipod touch you will have issues with it because it is not completely compatible with the ipod touches. There will be occasional disconnects and the only solution is to unplug and then plug back in your ipod, even on the latest firmware, 3.1 as of this message. I have confirmed this with Alpine support (which is sub par at best). This would have been a deal breaker for me, but luckily I have a classic also that works very well with it even though there are some minor quirks though (not a dealbreaker in my book), but that could be because of the ipod, it is rather old and has been run over.**
The way you access your ipod is pretty much mimicked through the Alpine. You have access to everything you would normally have when using your ipod (music, movies, podcasts, playlists...). The sound quality using the ipod to the headunit is nice!!! I am no audiophile but music sounds great from this headunit with the settings I currently have. I have heard from others that the IMPRINT module makes it sound even better if you don't know how to properly configure your settings by yourself (which I know I don't). Album artwork shows up nicely in the corner if you have artwork for the song or if you prefer, your next turn if using navigation. One thing I would have liked to have seen with the ipod integration is a search function so you don't have to scroll through all of your music. I have 4,000+ songs and even though you can scroll by alphabet, it would make things a lot faster in some cases if I could just use a search function that narrowed down all the available listings every time you clicked another letter to the song/artist/album name like you would do with your ipod. Speaking of the alphabet search function, it can be a little hairy at times. You would think that since one of the selling points of this head unit is its ipod integration, it would sort songs like iTunes does seeing as how iTunes is the only way to put songs on your ipod. For example, lets say I have the following list of songs:
Almost Easy
American Idiot
...And Justice for All
Arterial Black
Baba O'Riley
If I am currently on a screen that shows these 5 songs and I hit the Alphabet > button you would think it would put the 'B' listings at the top, but it doesnt. It sees the ... and puts that at the top of the screen since it is different from 'A'. So now we have ...And Justice for All at the top of the screen and if I were to hit the Alphabet > button again, Arterial Black would show at the top because 'A' is different from .... iTunes ignores these just like it does the word 'The' in song titles when sorting by alphabet but this headunit does not. Minor quirk, I know.
Video looks great on the 7 inch screen and the sound quality is great as well when using a DVD. If you use a converter to change a video to ipod format (instead of DVD format) from say .flv (YouTube's format) or .avi there is some sound/video quality loss but it is still convenient to be able to store all of your movies on your ipod and have them accessible at any time.
I also bought an Alpine backup camera to go along with the headunit and it is a dream to have. I am very surprised it came with toggable cones to help you measure distance. Along the same lines, this headunit is an awesome all in one system. There are connections for another AUX input so if you wanted to put in say a front camera or PS2, this system is accomodating. Be prepared to pony out the money for extras though (backup camera, Imprint, HD radio, SIRIUS, Bluetooth). These are all seperate modules that you must pay for. I was a little disheartened to see you had to pay out extra for Imprint and Bluetooth. Maybe not so much the Imprint, but definately the Bluetooth I felt should have been included.
The touchscreen user interface is responsive and user friendly, not to mention eye candy. Be prepared to hear people say "I want that" for any passengers you might have. Menus are easy to navigate and provide adequate system options. I cannot speak on audio options such as HPF or LPF, for people with aftermarket audio systems, as I don't have one and I have never dealt with options like that before.
All in all, this unit is a definate + in my book. I am very happy with my purchase and am glad I didn't buy a different head unit, I would just like to see some map updates and I will be a very happy man.

Initially I was skeptical of buying something other than Pioneer, as that's what I've had since Clarion went downhill in the late 90's. So far I am very pleased with this unit.
Pros:
Unit looks good
Graphics are simplistic and attractive - no funky colors here, almost stock in appearance
Screen is sharp and clear 800x480 resolution
Sound quality is better than expected
Video bypass is super simple - ground pink wire - no nag screen
Includes everything you need to install and operate
Front and rear USB ports
Supports 16 gig SD card - haven't tried 32 gig yet
Played most of the random downloaded movies I put on the SD card
Menus are easy enough to navigate
Optional bluetooth works very well
Cons:
Sticks out a bit from dash - had to modify my factory brackets to flush mount
Remote is terribly laid out, and some features only accessible from remote - like aspect and zoom
Unit is a bit slow scanning large amounts of media
Takes about 30 seconds to power off completely
No automatic dimmer
Volume control on unit sometimes lags
GUI not customizable
Radio reception slightly worse than others
Only a 3 band EQ? Really?
Media stops playing when you go to settings or source menu
When Subwoofer out is activated, bass is not sent to the main speakers - turn off sub out and use the rear rca out for subs
Conclusion:
Does way more than the big name brands for less than half the price.
I can have a 16 gig SD card full of movies, a 16 gig usb flash drive full of music, AND an ipod hooked up simultaneously. Would I buy this unit again? Definitely.

Samsung TL210 DualView 12.4 MP Digital Camera with 5X Optical Zoom (Red) Review

(More customer reviews)If you're considering this camera, you've most likely heard of Samsung's dual LCD feature which is probably the single best reason to purchase this particular camera model. I brought this camera along on a recent trip to Disneyland and having the LCD on the front of the camera took all the guesswork out of framing portrait shots of me and my girlfriend.
To start off, I'll address the dual LCD feature a little more in detail. Samsung made this camera very user-friendly by putting a "Front LCD" button next to the power button - push the Front LCD button and you're ready to take self-portrait shots of yourself or with one other person (I found it difficult to frame 3 people in the same shot using the Front LCD). This model (as well as the Samsung Dual View 12.2MP Digital Camera - Silver (TL205) can shoot video while the Front LCD is activated, which is a nice touch.
I found the camera's rear LCD bright and clear enough to rival Canon cameras within the same price range. Thankfully Samsung removed the touchscreen feature - touchscreen is really more a gimmick than anything else. There is a standard "wheel" where you can scroll through the various camera modes (video, night shots, auto mode, etc). When you scroll through each mode, the camera will display a short blurb about what each mode is designed for. There is an interesting "Beauty Shot" mode that claims to remove blemishes automatically however the pictures taken in this mode were not extraordinarily different than those taken in Auto mode. There is also a dual image stabilization mode which apparently uses both digital and optical image stabilization - I found these pictures to be a bit grainy and softer than pictures taken in Auto mode.
The weakest part of this camera is the picture quality. Yes, this camera produces 12.4 megapixels however a side-by-side comparison of pictures taken by the much older Canon PowerShot SD700 IS 6MP Digital Elph Camera with 4x Image Stabilized Zoom yields much better picture quality by the Canon camera (and the Canon is only 6 megapixels!). Pictures taken by this Samsung camera are not horrible but you will find that unless you take pictures in broad daylight with plenty of lighting, your pictures will come out grainy and soft (seems like too much automatic noise reduction by the Samsung). In low lighting situations (such as taking a picture with NO flash during the queue line for Space Mountain, this camera will produce pictures no better than the iPhone 3GS 2-megapixel camera).
Video quality is high-def 720p and is excellent. My only gripe is that whenever you zoom in or out, the audio will disappear until you stop zooming in/out. If you like to take wildlife videos and plan on doing a slow zoom, you'll end up with a silent movie :)
I had no problems with battery life - the Samsung lasted 4 days on a single charge for me with some power still left. I think I took about 200 photos and about 15 video clips in total. Note that you will need a Micro-SD card instead of the regular-sized SD card.
The outer housing of the camera is cheap glossy plastic and as one other reviewer mentioned, the camera IS NOT red but has a red stripe on one side. The glossy housing is a great way to see your own fingerprints. Although I appreciate how Samsung made this camera as light as a feather, it also feels like a camera that costs $50.
Pros: The Dual LCD feature is great (other manufacturers need to get on this), video quality (at highest setting) is excellent, camera is lightweight, rechargeable battery lasts a decent amount of time.
Cons: Grainy and soft images, especially at night (definitely not what you would expect from a 12.4 megapixel camera). Camera has a short but noticeable lag when taking pictures - especially after using the flash. The plastic housing feels cheap and will probably break after one drop. Fingerprint magnet.
For a starter camera, this is definitely a good choice. I'd say $129 is a more appropriate price for this camera given the image quality. I uploaded 3 photos taken in Disneyland into the Amazon product photo gallery at the top of the page in case anyone is interested to see the camera in action.

For one thing, the touch screen does not work with your fingers (it is supposed to work, but it practically does not) You have to use a stylus or some other sharp thing and use it to drag the screen up and down. Second, the speakers give out almost no sound. You have to use earphones or you don't hear a thing. Third, practically no apps to download. It does not have a flash player so you cannot stream in audio or video from a web site. Fourth, the minuscule instruction manual is worthless, plus it is written in such broken English that you don't know what they are talking about.
I will be throwing this piece of chinese junk away shortly.

Conclusion:
- Nice, cheap, fast tablet for those who like tinkering and don't give up fast if something does not work at start.
- Nice for satisfying the desire, and realising one doesn't really need it, without spending 600eur.
- Also nice for those who just need something cheap for pdf reading, surfing, video watching, music listening, some basic gaming

Clarion NX501 6.2" Double-DIN Navigation Multimedia Control Station Review

(More customer reviews)I just purchased this headunit from Amazon 7 days ago. I am now packing it for a return. I absolute love the interface, scrolling/swipe, and features. I can't, however, deal with the issues. It seems like Clarion got to a beta stage and just rushed it to release.
PROS
Gorgeous interface
Swiping / Scrolling is seamless
iPhone like usability
Comes with Sirius, BT, Nav, and iPod cables !
CONS
My issues are:
1) The Clarion advertised RCB199 external microphone does NOT work with the unit. This was confirmed by Clarion's technical support themselves. The gentleman on the phone said that an engineer is making a hardware change to fix the issue. Even so, it is unacceptable for Clarion to advertise this optional mic if it does NOT work with the unit. What were they thinking? I spent hours trying to figure out how to get it to work all to find out that they lied in the product description!
The internal BT mic picks up too much road noise on the highway and is unusable.
2) If you do not shut off the unit while on Sirius, then Sirius will NOT work when you turn on your unit (most of the time). You have to hold the power button down and reset the unit to reset Sirius. This is a major inconvenience. Clarion technical support said that "they are working on it" but it is "a problem with the Sirius tuner" and a software update "probably won't fix it." This is a major inconvenience.
3) My navigation antenna broke after 6 days. I pulled the cord out and it was not pinched or damaged in any way. Clarion offered to replace it (if I paid shipping) but this was my last straw and I decided to return the headunit. Why should I have to pay for shipping and send a part back if it's 6 days old?
4) Here and there, the iPod jitters and has a 1/2 second lag. It disrupts the song. This has been reported on other reviews. I have tried three iPod cable and another iPod with no success. It is most definitely a software error.
5) This headunit is BLUE. Absolutely everything is blue. For a retail price of $1,000, I should be able to adjust the color to match my dash. When the unit boots, the LEDs turn red so they actually used multi-color LEDs but didn't give us the option of changing them. In addition, you CANNOT change the wallpaper for iPod, Sirius, BT, etc. You can only change the source wallpaper which you are never on. Also, if you import a wallpaper and select a default wallpaper, you automatically lose you imported wallpaper forever. I called Clarion and they said no update is planned--Blue is here to stay.
6) Dimming works fine, but you cannot dim the buttons. At night the bright blue buttons are distracting and strains your eyes.
Minor issues:
It takes 4-5 clicks to change the subwoofer level. This is dangerous if you want to turn it down for a bass-intensive song while driving.
You cannot change the splash screen.
Nav is slow to start (music starts very quickly)
The previous model, the NX500, has no firmware updates so I doubt Clarion will fix these issues with their new model. I'm looking into a competing product (X930BT, NT3HDT, DDX series) and will never consider Clarion again. That is how disgusted I am with all of these issues.

(More customer reviews)I ordered the Besta MT-7000 from Amazon.com (ace photo digital). It was delivered on time, in 100% working order, and with a full one year warranty certificate included in the package.
After just a few days of using the BESTA MT-7000, I'm convinced this touch screen electronic Chinese(Mandarin)/English device is one of the best on the market. Owning this device is like having my own personal Chinese tutor, except better. I can take it everywhere I go and it fits in my back pocket.
This will definately make your life easier if you speak English and plan to visit China. In fact, I would highly recommend putting the BESTA MT-7000 on the top of your list of items to take with you on a trip to China.
It is easy to use. The touch screen works perfect. The sound quality is crystal clear. While wearing the included earpiece it feels as if the English/Mandarin speaking voice is sitting next to me in a quiet room. It has every imaginable feature on it to help an English speaking person learn to read, write, and speak Chinese. It uses the PINYIN method of teaching Chinese.
The list of features of this device are too long for me to write about here but here are the top 3 features I like best:
#1-If you see a Chinese character or characters and would like to have it's meaning translated into English, you can simply draw the character(s) on the touch screen, and it will recognize the character(s) and give you it's definition in English, PINYIN, and Chinese. It also gives you several sentences in English, PINYIN, and Chinese using that particular character(s) to help give you an even better understanding of the character (It also pronounces those full sentences for you syllable by syllable). It pronounces each and every character for you (The head and shoulders of a Chinese lady comes onto the screen and does the pronouncing so you can watch her mouth movements) On top of that, it shows you how to correctly draw all of the characters, stroke by stroke, while pronouncing the names of the strokes used. It's just one of the many impressive and invaluable features of the BESTA MT-7000.
#2- Is the application to help you learn, and correctly pronounce all of the PINYIN Initials, Finals, and the combinations of the two, along with all of the correct tones. A small box comes onto the bottom right of the screen that shows the bottom half of a Chinese woman's face clearly, and correctly pronouncing the PINYIN Initials and Finals. It is crystal clear with the earpiece and you can watch her mouth movements as well. You can even talk into the device and it will tell you how you did in pronouncing the PINYIN by grading you from 1-100% correct.
#3-Is the MP3 player. It's very easy to download your MP3's into this device and the sound quality is outstanding when using the included earpiece. You can even download your favorite videos and pictures into this and probably anything else you have stored on a memory card or your computer (You can insert a memory card into this device or use the included cable to download directly from you computer).
Note: Before I purchased this device I was learning Chinese from podcasts I downloaded from online plus various other information I found online. I was easily able to download those podcasts and other information onto the BESTA MT-7000. So, if there is something you can't find on this device, or features you wish it had, you can more than likely add it yourself or add it with the help of someone from their customer service department.
If you have questions on what you can or cannot add, or any other questions, I'd suggest contacting their customer service department. I called them once before I bought this device and they were friendly and helpful in answering my questions.

Touch Screen 4GB 2.8-Inch TFT MP5 Movie Music Personal Media Player Review

We found that it was easy to load music, videos and games on from my computer - just a matter of copying files from the computer to the device. It is also easy to use once you get the hang of it. The screen is bright and crisp and it seems to be pretty durable. My daughter loves the internal speaker (no ear buds required) and the touch screen display. The only "wishes" that we have for it are - a place to put the little "pen" on the machine, and that the touch screen were a little more sensitive. Her best friend has an I-pod Nano and was jealous of all the features that this little player has and how well it works compared to the I-pod.

- no support for cd changers but many feel that because of usb drives and ipods, changers are legacy...whatever!
What's a CD? Does anybody use them anymore? :)
- touch screen has a sweet spot that is small and off-center so it's easy to make the wrong selection and have to waste time on a redo...
Haven't noticed it yet. There is a calibration for the screen that needs/can be done so maybe that would fix your issue.
- no IR functionality which means wireless remotes cannot be used and this unit really needs one...
I never liked remotes in a car. I've had three head units that had remotes, including the one I just took out. Never put a battery in them. The head unit is arms length away, the remote is under the seat, stuck to a french fry, whatever. What is the remote for? I know some people like them, I just never have.
- xm works great BUT xm traffic is not supported, only msn direct...
Yeah, XM traffic would be better. MSN is a no go. Per their website they are shutting down the service. However, all the online reviews of this unit say getting the MSN is a no brainer, that it's data in invaluable. Go figure.
- no exterior mute button....
Hold down the voice prompt button and it mutes. I luckily noticed this in the manual when I was perusing it during the install.
- installing the hd radio module disables regular am/fm functionality...
Hmm, that's odd. I asked about it and wasn't told this was an issue. I didn't get HD radio so I cannot comment.
- route guidance has no introductory statement to start your route, you just start driving and eventually it begins giving directions...
Good. The less it talks the better. I have people in the car, the telephone going, stuff to remember to do. Just tell me where to turn already, skip the rest.
- route guidance audio does not identify by exit number, street or exit name, just take next and you must look at screen for what next is...
Hmm, good point. I didn't think about this before. I guess refer to the point above for me. Just keep me from blasting by the turn. I'll handle the rest. The road, distance, and direction of turn are on screen.
- last unit i had gave me my vehicle speed as well as the current posted speed limit, this unit gives neither...
Agreed! Sorta. I love having the GPS speed on screen for some strange reason. The GPS speed is available on a setup/calibration screen, but not on the main screen to my knowledge. I guess I can get my GPS calculated speed fix there. As for the speed limit on the GPS, I think I'll trust the handy dandy signs that were happily stuck in the ground for my personal amusement along the side of the road.
- adding a route is real work. to start a route you must type each and every complete word exactly, it does not help you complete words with suggested common choices nor is it flexible when searching...
Type in part of the word and hit enter, it'll show the most likely matches. The route seemed perfectly easy to enter to me, and thank God, the keyboard layout is a QWERTY so you know where the letter is without singing the alphabet song.
- when recalculating a route, it says nothing and starts the process very slowly.
Again, thank God. Say less, do more. I hate it when you are going off route manually and you don't want to key in your change. "Recalculating route....Recalculating route...etc, etc until you give in and either cancel the route or get through your detour."
- there is a search by address voice function, but it's slow and awkward, using it is a real struggle...
All voice commands are slow and awkward to me. I've been amazed at how accurate this thing has been so far.
- no voice commands for basics such as "go home", "cancel route", etc. so you must touch screen through several menu layers for them...
I haven't tried this yet. Go home should be a voice command. I agree. Good points. I did take the time to setup my custome home screen. It has icons for cancel route and go home so they are right there on the home screen. Nice.
POI TRULY SUCKS...
I already tried some POIs. They were not in there as often as I'd like so I agree. But, via the SD card you can load POIs so I'll give it a pass. If it's something I need I'll load it. If not, oh well. I can always look up the address. I did take the time to load some POIs just to see how this worked. I now have every Hooters in the US on my GPS. Sorta overkill as I really don't like chicken wings that much but considering how easy it was to add thousands of esoteric POI waypoints, I think it would be hard to knock what they have built in.
So far, this unit has been pretty much everything I wanted. I pulled out and replaced a Clarion 675 VXD with this Pioneer. It's so much better than the Clarion it's hard to imagine. Everything works as it's supposed to on the Pioneer. Not so on the Clarion. And Pioneer is using Parrott's bluetooth technology. I love Parrott.
I do have a couple of squawks that aren't mentioned previously. The unit, like everything in this country today, has a legal warning. Of course, somebody lost a lawsuit somewhere along the way and not only do we have to agree not to be stupid once, we now have to agree every time the unit boots. I've sort of resigned myself to this fact of life, however, there is a quirk with the Pioneer. Until you ok the legal screen, some of the functionality doesn't work. The iPod voice recognition it does at every boot up doesn't start until you have clicked ok and if you have just updated your iPod this VR load can take several minutes. If you are on the audio screen, as I often am, the warning screen doesn't appear. It's a navigation warning screen, so audio is playing from your last song but the unit is effectively nerfed until you click ok, no VR load, no audio commands, etc. The backup camera does work and it does immediately, which is good. It can be frustrating to jump in the car, fire up and want to start a phone conversation right away but the voice commands won't work till the VR load finishes, the VR load won't start till you click ok, and none of that will start till you click ok on the nav screen which probably isn't up and running. It would be nice if after 30 seconds you haven't clicked ok, it just times out and starts it's normal process or if the warning screen would pop up over navigation and audio so you can click ok. (Update to this note.) Turns out the issue above is actually a quirk of my installation. We may have accidentally performed a work around to eliminate the speed sensing ability of the Pioneer, which would enable the use of the navigation system, and video playback, while the vehicle is in motion. The issue I noted above is a side effect of this work around. Out of the box, this issue apparently does not exist, but you cannot use the navigation system above 10mph, which is in itself annoying in my opinion.

All video was shot with either my MinoHD or the Samsung H200. The video review notes when the changeover happens.
I was pleasantly surprised at the overall quality of this camcorder. First off I used to work around large guns while in the Navy. I have some hearing loss. I did not hear a single whine as mentioned in other reviews. I asked my wife who has no hearing loss and she heard no whine while it was operating. I can only assume they fixed that issue as mentioned in the other reviews.
Video Quality:
It is significantly better than the Flip MinoHD Camcorder 2nd Generation, 2 Hours (Brushed Metal), although its more like oranges and nectarines with that comparison. But, its the only other real HD camcorder I have to compare it to. That being said it is 1080i and not 1080p. I know there are purists out there that insist that an HD camcorder should be 1080p, and yes that is partially true. I do throw this in for consideration that a camcorder with a higher pricetag should be that level and not one geared towards every day use such as this camcorder.
Ease of use +
This camera has very few buttons. I think they took a page from Apple's book with regard to having a simplistic interface. There is complexity to the interface but it is within the touch screen. The touch screen is more like an ATM type of touch screen and not like an iPod Touch screen. Its very easy to use and with generous button pushes the camera responds well. I love being able to pop out the SD card, plug it in my adapter and copy the already encoded H.264 video over to my iMac. It saves me literally hours of compression/re-compression hooha that I really never enjoyed.
Audio: +
It captures the smallest noises from birds chirping far away to leaves rustling. Each sound channel is distinct and well rendered on the final product. I did voice over on the video during the H200 recordings because my kids and dog decided to have a screamfest at the point I was outside recording.
Component Connection AV +
I connected it to my VIZIO HD 1080p LCD HDTV via the AV interface. It was crisp and looked fantastic. Sure it was not 1080p but honestly I couldn't tell. I come from a generation that used to have shoulder mounted VHS camcorders to lug around. This is so good I would almost think its broadcast quality, at least on a 720 channel.
Features not tested:
I did not test the time lapse video yet. I plan on making a video with this to record an outside scene. Once I do that I will post where to watch it here, as I cannot have 2 video reviews up. I did not use HDMI because the output is a smaller HDMI and I did not have one handy.
Recommendations:
Get a class 10 SD Card. Dont mess around with lower quality cards when the video needs speed not only to record but also to transfer. The costs of class 10 are not that bad these days. Here is one to have a peek at:SanDisk 8GB Extreme SDHC Class 10 High Performance Memory Card
Video corrections:
The mailbox is about 200 yards up the road not 500. Also, the ports on the bottom are outputs and or inputs. This camera does not have HDMI input.

The deck has great sound quality, and great iPod integration, complete with album art and the ability to quickly browse artists or songs, even with 6000 plus songs on your iPod. The NAV system is useless and a real disappointment. A 2 year old $100 Garmin stand alone GPS performs light years ahead of this. I actually just came back from a 3 state road trip using both a $100 Garmin and this Pioneer. Four times on the trip, the Garmin said turn left, and the Pioneer said "turn right". The Garmin was correct with the short and faster path all 4 times. Every trip I've used the Pioneer with has the estimated arrival time about two hours later than actual arrival time, and it doesn't adjust until the final few miles of the trip. Completely inaccurate, bad directions, no speedometer. I could go on, but suffice it to say it's BAD BAD BAD. I'll probably be selling this one on eBay when someone finally comes out with a good iPOD interface AND good nav systems.

Samsung HMX-H104 HD SSD Flash Memory Camcorder with 16 GB Memory and 10x Optical Zoom Review

(More customer reviews)I now consider myself a collector of camcorders. Still, I demand excellent quality with point and shoot simplicity. My camcorder of choice up until now has been the Samsung SC HMX-20C for its brilliant video quality and amazing still photos, and the ability to take great photos while filming. I saw the HMX-H104 and thought it looks very similar. How is it different?
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Out of the box, the HMX-H104 is sleek and stylish with the trademark bullet shape of the Samsung camcorders. It's smaller and weighs less than its cousin, the SC HMX-20C. The first thing I notice is the case, which has a rubbery grip. I like the feel, I can get a good grip and it feels sturdy in my hands. The little door on the rear leading to all the ports feels like flimsy plastic, but even that is attractive to the eye.
The lens cover closes automatically. I touch it and it feels paper thin, opens easily when I push it. It will keep the dust out. I wonder if it will take a knocking, but I hesitate to challenge it. The SC HMX-20C's lens is also automatic and opens when I push it, but it feels a little sturdier. At least I won't have to remember to put the lens cap back on.
The record button is awkwardly placed. This is true of all the bullet-shaped Samsungs that I own (I have three). It is to the far right of the rear of the camcorder. That makes it difficult to grip the camcorder with the thumb while activating the record button. I'd prefer it more to the left, or better yet on the top of the camcorder. The swivel grip does help with the handling, but it is nowhere as comfortable to hold as a Sanyo Xacti, for instance.
Both camcorders have flash memory onboard or I can choose to use a memory card (both are compatible with SDHC and SC HMX-20C can use MMCPlus). HMX-H104 has double the capacity of its cousin: 16 GB versus 8 GB.
Both camcorders lack a full manual. It is included on a disc, which means I will never read it.
VIDEO
Flip the screen open on the HMX-H104 and it's on, unlike the SC HMX-20C where I need to press the power button. HMX-H104 responds lightening fast. Turning on from sleep mode is even faster.
Both camcorders sport anti-shake technology; but that technology still needs further development, since I have yet to find a camcorder where the image doesn't shake when handheld, especially when the image is zoomed. Tip: use a tripod when possible.
Video quality of both camcorders in broad daylight is comparable. They are both excellent. In lowlight conditions, I prefer the SC HMX-20C (less video noise), but the HMX-H104 is not far behind.
HMX-H104 has wide screen format, great for viewing on my wide screen TV.
PHOTO
Nothing beats SC HMX-20C, which has the best camera in a camcorder I've ever seen. HMX-H104 sometimes give me blurry photos -- very blurry, to the point that I couldn`t even recognize the object or subject in the photo. Okay, I think I didn't press the button just right. But I am using the automatic function and just pressing the photo button every time, not doing anything different and it's great, sometimes better than SC HMX-20C . . . and then it's not. I never know when it will be blurry. Most of the time, the photos look wonderful; but it's not nearly so hard with SC HMX-20C, where I've never had a blurry photo, ever.
Also, I find photos of my son under incandescent light looks better with the SC HMX-20C. It automatically adjusts color and white balance better so that his skin tone looks more natural.
The HMX-H104 has a flash, but it is not as hefty as the pop-up flash of the SC HMX-20C.
When taking photos while filming, I feel there is more of a lag time with HMX-H104. It's not as bad as some others, but SC HMX-20C is better, if only by a split second. That does make a difference when taking photos. When I press that button, that's the photo I want, not a second later.
INTELLI-STUDIO
This is a new one for me. Connect the camcorder to the computer via USB cable and video editing software automatically runs. No need to install software from a disc. Move the video to a folder, edit it right there, make your movie.
Personally, I will not use this feature much. The video editing is basic and will involve a lot of work, unless all I want to do is trim a little and add a title. I like video editing software that includes a wizard -- plug my video in and churn out a movie I can fine-tune to my liking.
SC HMX-20C does not have Intelli-Studio. In fact, I do not own any other camcorder which has this feature. Interesting, but not necessary in my book.
Where HMX-H104 is superior to SC HMX-20C:
* it is smaller: 4 ?" versus 5"
* it weighs less: 13.7 ounces versus 17.5 ounces (with batteries included)
* it has a rubbery grip making it attractive with a no-slip comfortable to hold, although the matte finish of the SC HMX-20C is also attractive
* it turns on the minute the screen is flipped open versus needing to press the power button
* it has a sleep mode
* it has more internal memory: 16 GB versus 8 GB
* it has a faster boot up and access time
* it has built-in video editing software -- installs automatically to the computer when I plug in my camcorder
* it automatically turns off when its been on too long
* it records in wide screen formatWhere they both excel:

* nice sleek designs
* they record in full HD
* they have 10X optical zoom
* the grips swivel to adjust for comfort
* automatic lens cap, though they push open easily and the HMX-H104's lens cover is paper thin
* both come with remotes.
Where they both need improvement:
* the record buttons are awkwardly placed
* manuals are on a disc, thought the quick start guide of the SC HMX-20C is more thorough.
Where HMX-H104 is inferior:
* photos while not filming can be completely out of focus and blurry on occasion
* photos while filming have slightly more lag time
* videos are not as good under lowlight conditions
* SC HMX-20C has a heftier pop-up flash
* SC HMX-20C comes with a nice, soft pouch. HMX-H104 does not come with anything to hold it in.
SUMMARY
If you want a camcorder that's a brilliant camera with great video quality, get the SC HMX-20C. It doesn't get better than that.
If you want a slightly smaller camcorder with good video quality, large internal storage capacity, fast start-up, wide screen capability, an automatic camera function that is very good but occasionally acts up, go for HMX-H104. You won't be disappointed.

(More customer reviews)I bought my new car knowing I will save a couple grand getting an after market in-dash sat-nav. I've been driving with the JVC unit for about a month, and wanted to make sure I got a lot of field use before writing a review. I agree with a lot of the reviewers and will try to add some more input for those on the fence. This is my first in-dash sat nav, so I have no basis of comparison.
Reasons for buying:
Economical - compared to the Kenwood with the Garmin interface and bluetooth option, this was a steal.
Detachable Faceplate - This was the primary reason.. faceplate springs out, and clicks back in with a sense of durability. It does come with a pouch, although does look like a womens clutch when carried. You will need to ask your woman to carry this around.
Bluetooth - Works beautifully, syncs automatically. Audio was surprisingly loud.. If you are an audiophile, you'll just connect it via front facing USB.
HD Radio - works as advertised, works even better near major cities.. radio stations that transmit HD have multiple stations..
Traffic Updates - wow, was very skeptical on this but was amazed when it diverted me to exit off a highyway to avoid 20 min worth of traffic. You can set it to manual (GPS will prompt to reroute after giving a heads up on traffic on your route), automatic, or you can just turn the feature off.
For people that use their iPhones, the syncing is seamless. I've been using this head unit with the iPhone4, and have only minor complaints. I use bluetooth music streaming majority of the time, considering the front USB is kind of an eye sore. (Poor aesthetic choice, but that's personal preference and minor really) None are real deal breakers. These are breakdown of the good and the bad
- id3 tags are not transmitted via bluetooth, only wired USB connection only (ie album art, artist info, song name, etc)
- downloads your phonebook, recent incoming and outgoing calls for faster dials
- voice commands works with Mic
- video does not display on head unit - audio only (if someone has figured this out, please let me know)
- Incoming voice calls automatically mutes music and displays caller info on the screen (Only calls, not text messages)
- one button for fast swapping for speakerphone or if you want to use the phone for calls
*make sure you don't have the maps app running in background when using the gps, it will interfere with the signal. (sounds like common sense, but you forget what apps are running)
Out of the box, it does everything beautifully. The installer was able to bypass the parking brake for in driving DVD viewing. This wasn't important to me, but changing destinations while driving is. I have the steering wheel kit installed, and only 4 out the 6 buttons work. Volumes up and down, Tuning radio stations up and down, are the only functioning buttons. The mute, and the source button no longer has functionality.
Another thing I'd like to add is the POI's (points of interest). When using it to find the local fed ex store, the closest location it routed me was 176 miles away. It bypassed the local ones I've known to exist for several years. I quickly researched on how to add POI's to the head unit. The JVC website has specialized software to download POI's and load them to the head unit. The only thing is the software is only compatible for window users only. Mac OSX is not supported. So for Mac users, you're out of luck until they release a compatible version.
Wrap up
All around impressed on the interfaces ease of usability. No learning curve required. You can turn off the speed alerts and adjust it to 20 MPH above speed limit. Those alerts are handy on long road trips, but are quite annoying on everyday driving. The screen isn't as vivid as others, but still nice. The bluetooth functionality is definitely one of the best features.
I will add more to this review as I find more things about it. But if you know how to fix the things I've complained about, please let me know. And if you are on the fence about buying this, just know you'll have peace of mind knowing that you don't have to worry about theft as much. Any questions regarding this unit, let me know.
