(More customer reviews)I waited anxiously for this camera to arrive, and it finally did... 2.5 weeks later. Then, as soon as I plugged it in to my computer, It said "USB device not recognized". I tried the camera on 3 different computers, and all gave the same message. The instructions were in unlegible english (if you can call it that), and the camera does not even turn on or take a charge. JUNK JUNK JUNK! I should have known when I couldn't find this camera made by a well-known manufacturer. Don't get ripped off like I did!

Dash Mount Car Video and Sound Recorder Review

Cons: 50 min recording time between resets, focal range too close, usless laser aiming device, bad positioning of external power plug, tightening knob tends to loosen up, camera loop records over previous video on SD card.
The camera itself performs at advertised. The camera has a small footprint and doesn't obscure your forward view. Setup was easy (3 steps), and the mounting tape used is very dependable and is still holding well. Battery life is good (about 2.5-3 hrs), and a 12v lighter plug is included for external power. The image is very steady considering the amount of bouncing motion a typical car goes through.
The 50 min recording time is a minor inconvenience and is not noticeable during normal usage. The reset time is relatively short (a few seconds).
Unfortunately, the focal range is such that the vehicle ahead of you appears closer than it actually is (ie 30' between cars looks like 12'). This can be a detriment if the video is being used for insurance purposes (ie: following too close?).
The red laser used for positioning is pretty much useless in daylight. It also requires you to continuously hold down a button to use. This makes it impossible to accurately aim as the slightest hand movement throws off the aiming. This function is also dangerous to attempt while driving.
The external 12v power plug is located on the TOP of the unit! The bottom or rear would have been the most natural choice. Also, the tightening knob used to secure the camera to the mounting base often loosens up (road and/or engine vibration?), allowing the downward pressure of the plug to throw off the camera's aim.
Overall, the product is O.K. You'll just have to remember to:
1. Frequently tighten knob and check aiming.
2. Rely more on battery power to avoid 12v cord aiming issue.
3. Use between 1GB and 2GB card for longer continuous record times.
4. Unless needed, clear out the video images on the SD card after each
trip.
5. Give yourself plenty of room between cars to avoid perception
of "following too closely."

(More customer reviews)If you can actually translate the horrible 'English' version of the instructions, you will find that it does work, sort of. Here is the good points: It is rechargable, instead of using expensive AAA batteries. It does work, though you have a static background noise in your audio files. The images are pretty good too. Very easy to operate once you can translate the 'instructions'.
Now here is the bad. The two hour charge is just that, 2 hours. If you want to record something and put it on 'pause', the battery will run out after two hours, even if it's not recording any sound or video. Standby still drains the battery, so you only have 2 hours of recording. It won't work (record) if you plug it in to a powersource either. Then, when it does record (when it's on standby), it will shut off after 1 minute, 59 seconds, regardless of whether there is still talking or noise going on! That is the worst.
To get it to work for any long term recording, you have to have a micro sd card. To turn it on, press power. To record with standby, press power and then hit the 'mode' button. It works, but it doesn't record more than two hours, so if you are trying to use it for audio surveillance, on say, a possibly cheating spouse or whatever, I wouldn't recommend it unless you know exactly when you are going to need it recorded, and then use it. To record, hit power, and then the little gray button at the top of the unit, hit it again to turn it off. Easy peasy.
The best thing about it is that it's rechargeable. I had bought another recorder that sucked up AAA batteries like they were candy and still didn't record anything that I could hear.
Anyone have a recommendation for something that is rechargeable but can last for more than 2 hours on standby mode?
