Intel DP55KG Extreme Series Desktop Motherboard (P55 ATX Core i7 Core i5 LGA1156) Review

Intel DP55KG Extreme Series Desktop Motherboard (P55 ATX Core i7 Core i5 LGA1156)

I decided to build a computer after a 10 year hiatus.
SPECS:
I chose this motherboard, 4gb (2x2g)Corsair XMS 3 1600mhz ram,the new unlocked Intel i-875K processor cooled by a Corsair Hydro H50. Also went with Ultra X4 750 watt modular Power Supply, Hitachi 1gb 7200rpm Sata HD, Lite-On 24x DVD+RW, the LEXA S Case, and the EVGA GTX480 video card, and Asus XONAR Essence ST Soundcard. I have a 30 inch Dell 3008WFP Monitor, Apple Blue-tooth Wireless Keyboard and Logitech Performance Mouse MX to complete out my build. I am running Windows 7 Professional 64bit 1 user OEM.
INSTALL:
It took me most of a Friday night to get this built. Mostly because the back plate of the Cooler doesn't fit correctly, I had to live with some bow in the back plate to get the 4th screw in. But all and all not too bad. It booted fine the first time. I didn't realize you can't use a Blue-tooth Keyboard at first so I had to grab an older cordless usb Microsoft one to actually set up Windows. The motherboard lined us great with my case and the SATA Cables and many of the other cables were able to route behind the motherboard through rubberized holes in the case. I had no issues installing the motherboard at all, just fine, and well laid out to plug in 4 fans, a water cooler, sata plugs, case front panel wires, power wires, etc. A+++
PERFORMANCE:
I didn't know how to overclock anymore after 10 years. So I read some stuff googling and wasn't sure and instead just used the Intel Desktop Control Panel to experiment. I ended up setting the Ram to 1600mhz and only changing the multiplier to 29x in quad config, 30 in three, and 31 in 2 and single core. I get a score of about 9,000 on CPU Mark. That was all I needed to do, no changing voltages or any of the rest of it. That is what worked best and has run cool and solid ever since.
FEATURES:
The blue-tooth doesn't work for my Apple keyboard, it recognizes it, lets you type in the code but loses connection, so I use a small usb dongle instead. The Video Card sits fine. There is some bling you can turn on in the bios for lights and a blue skull with glowing red eyes. I turned it on high since I have a case window. The real feature is the Intel Control Panel. It shows temps, overclock settings and fan speeds and lets you save profiles. That is a great feature and now that I am done overclocking, I don't use the bios anymore. I also downloaded the latest drivers and firmware from Intel. Paired with the Asus Soundcard (got because of the powerful headphone amp built in) I just use Grado SR-80 and Sennheiser RS140 wireless headphones and a set of Altec Lansing FX6021 speakers.
FINAL IMPRESSION: For me this was a good jump back in to building my own computer. I wasn't satisfied with anything pre-built that I could afford. Building my own let me spend in the areas I valued. The Intel Board was a great choice because it runs well and is very expandable with a second or even third video card and lots of SATA and USB Ports. Get one!

Lenovo Ideapad U-450p 14-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 6 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium) Review

Lenovo Ideapad U-450p 14-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 6 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)
Average Reviews:

So, I did extensive research on the ulv-class laptops from Asus, Acer, Toshiba, and Lenovo. My main goal was to buy a mid-range ($500-700) culv laptop with Windows 7 to tide me over until the release of the Asus UL80-JT (I3 CULV with automatic switchable graphic cards and 12 hours of battery life), which won't be released until later in the year.
What I got was exactly that. The reviews complained mostly about the Lenovo customer service, which I have not dealt with personally. However, I have heard that Lenovo's customer service isn't *that* bad and it is a smaller company than HP or Dell (you and your laptop will actually end up worse for the wear after dealing with their customer service). No one's customer service can ever compete with the quality Asus customer service, and I was sad that the price point on the Asus ul30 and ul80 moved back up to around $850 on Amazon and that they were sold out on most other websites, but so it goes.
So, onto the Lenovo, it has a sleek look and you will never have a fingerprint problem. The keyboard is the most ergonomically designed keyboard I have seen on a thin and light laptop and it has the greatest feel to it. The laptop does not feel flimsy at all and seems pretty sturdy all around. It comes with a CD/DVD drive, which is great, since most of the other thin and lights have eliminated an optical drive in favor of weight.
The veriface log-in is a cool added feature.
The screen has really good resolution and the laptop comes with a really decent graphics card. The one obvious drawback to this is that it takes a toll on the battery life. Now, I've moved from a normal laptop getting 2 hours of battery life at the most, so I am enjoying the added battery life. However, it is not as good as some of the other culv laptops. I get about 4 hours and 15 minutes on average depending on what I am doing. This is again, great compared to the regular lithium ion batteried-laptops, but it seems pretty average for the culv class laptops with Acer boasting 9 hours and Asus boasting 12 hours. (Asus doesn't get 12 hours but instead close to 9, but that still rates above the Lenovo). So, I ultimately find myself a bit annoyed when I have to plug the Lenovo in.
The laptop runs cool and quietly and with no real noticeable fan noise.
I think the only con on this laptop is the battery life AS COMPARED to other laptops in its class. Overall, however, I am happy with the purchase and would recommend it to people who are looking to get a less expensive culv laptop, because it ultimately has a better price point than its competitors.Lenovo Ideapad U-450p 14-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 6 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)

Intel DX58SO Extreme Series X58 ATX Triple-channel DDR3 16GB SLI or CrossFireX LGA1366 Overclocking Utility Desktop Board - Retail Review

First off their is no IDE or PS/2 connections so be ready for that. After I got everything in my computer put together and ready to go I went to plug in my keyboard and it was usb only. So just find yourself an a adapter or get yourself a new keyboard. The price of DDR3 is cheap so its not so much a big deal to invest in. There is one PCI slot and now with the newer BIOS update its SLI compatible which is great since when I read the description it says that its only Crossfire ready. If you want to go with something beyond two way SLI than you may want to go with the EVGA model which has more DIMM slots as well. I was going to go with EVGA but my new case would not allow it and I don't have the budget for three cards. I like the way the board is situated with DIMM slots running vertical and looks like everything is closer to the processor than on other boards I have seen. I guess when everything is moving at light speed a smallest measurement closer makes a difference on a motherboard. Install is a cinch just make sure you take your time and don't rush and make a stupid mistake. I have found that in my experience I mess up on stupid things instead of something big. Overclocking has been a little more simplified on this board which is what you should probably do if you invest in these boards. Overall this board has everything that I need with lots of SATA and USB ports and its super fast with my i7 920 along with my 6 Gigs of Corsair Dominator DDR3. All I can say is I can't wait to get my hands into some overclocking when I get the free time. Keep in mind only 64 bit Vista will see anything above about 3 and a half gigs so if you don't want 64 than just be ready not to see what you put in. One minor issue is the setup of the PCI Express slots since I have an 8800 GTS (one of the fatties) and a Creative X-Fi sound card it doesn't leave room for another 8800 GTS without me having to remove my sound card. Its not that big of an issue though since I plan on getting a smaller newer card anyways. Though if you have a fat card like me and something in the PCI slot and want to run SLI you might run into trouble so that is worth noting in my mind. Is this board worth it though I would have to say absolutely yes.
According to Intel sticking in a fourth stick will cause a degrade in performance so since most ram that's DDR3 come in three packs its not so much a big deal. Also when it first came on and I entered BIOS everything was recognized but I could not get the thing to boot my ROM drive and it would just sit there with a black screen and then it would ask me to select cd drive type 1 or 2. After about three hours or so it all of a sudden worked after I selected 1 it booted finally and everything was installed (operating system). The next problem was it would not restart and as soon as my computer would go off and come on again it would be a black screen going nowhere. Then I remembered update your BIOS dummy and I read all the notes and a lot of issues I had was fixed in the BIOS update including my restart problem. There was an issue also with my type of ROM drive not booting when put first in priority and that is the issue I had with trying to get it to boot to install my operating system. Now everything runs perfect and I could not be happier. The reason I put all this in my review was it did not go as smooth as I thought it would and someone else might have problems. If you do have issues just drop me a comment and maybe I can help you out just from what I had to do.

Toshiba Satellite A355-S6935 16.0-Inch Laptop Review

Toshiba Satellite A355-S6935 16.0-Inch Laptop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my second Toshiba laptop. Number one is around 4 years old and still works well.
This review is more about the A355 chassis, than this exact spec laptop, and should apply to just about every one of the laptops in this series whether they run AMD or Intel chips.
The first view is that the materials are just plain flat out gorgeous. From the shiny exterior, to the semi rounded base, the two large chrome mouse buttons, the nicely integrated Harmon Kardon speakers, the illuminated touch areas, the big beautiful monitor, and those shiny keys. Yes this is one very pretty computer.
Under that pretty hood are some interesting specs. It used to be incredibly rare to see an eSATA port on any computer, let alone a laptop. Well this one has exactly that - an eSATA port that doubles as a USB port. Nice option to hook up external hard drives. It also includes an iLink, Firewire, or IEEE-1394 port - an incredible rarity (even Apple dropped this port). The audio ports and volume control are on the front, nicely placed. There's absolutely no ports on the rear. There's also an express card slot (not a PCMCIA slot, but EXPRESS card slot) and a multi flash memory card reader (they've dropped CF from the list). It does not include Bluetooth - a very strange omission since every single bluetooth adapter uses the Toshiba stack to run. Use either of these adapters, they work perfectly: IOGear GBU421 Bluetooth 2.0 USB Micro Adapter or Cirago BTA3210 Class 2 Micro Bluetooth Adapter (Black Tip) - both are outstanding miniscule adapters.
Toshiba stuffed 4Gb of RAM and a 320Gb hard drive into this big baby. Those are some pretty nice features in a laptop this inexpensive. Those Harmon Kardon speakers sound very nice.
You'll either hate this or love it, and fortunately you can turn this off if you hate it. The Toshiba name, a little band above the scratchy navigation pad, and the media buttons all light up white (pretty bright at that). I think it looks pretty cool, but others have hated all those lights.
The monitor, oh that monitor is gorgeous. Movies pop, they look absolutely fantastic on this computer. It's a nice big screen. Yes it is a gloss finish and you do get some reflections here or there, but generally it's not bad.
The keys are all glossy and the fanatical among you might not like all the visible fingerprints, but I think most will get over that quickly. There is just a ton of room to put your hands to type and use the computer. That surface in front is sweet for a palm rest.
Function-wise, this computer is a decent performer. Nobody is buying this to run heavy games or render video - it won't do those things. But for the occasional game, the occasional video edit, you'll score well here.
Do note, this computer runs Windows Vista Premium 64-Bit. Please don't be afraid of that operating system. I'm running 64 bit on two computers and it runs just beautifully. There is almost no new hardware that won't run under 64 bit these days. It's a rock solid platform. And that OS allows all 4Gb of memory to be seen and used (32 bit tops out at 3Gb). And if you don't believe me, type this into google - pcmag 64 bit computing. Read the first article in that hit list.
This is no lightweight computer. It's a big, pretty heavy laptop. Great for around the house. Not something you would travel everywhere with. But it is portable. Heat generation is nothing extreme. It does pull air in from below, so be careful about couches or beds plugging those holes.
It's a good solid fast computer. There's a bit of fan noise, nothing huge, but you will know the machine is running. I hate to comment on battery life, that's so dependent on how bright you make the screen, processor speed settings and the like. I got a good solid 2 hours of hitting it very hard at max everything. You could probably get a good 3 hours, maybe 4 at more conservative settings.
Something to keep in mind, Toshiba ships all their laptops full of bloat-ware. It's a really good idea to remove it all. Almost none of it is necessary. There are two websites that will clear all that garbage out of your computer. It's explained in a great article at PCMag. Type this into google, PCMag make the most out of your new pc. The first hit will be a fantatstic article on how to remove the garbage.
Overall, this is a big, beautiful, good sounding, heavy, hard working, well priced laptop.
June 2009 Update - well my son managed to crack the screen. He has no idea how this happened, but it's certainly not Toshiba's fault. I will admit the top is somewhat flexible, but that's not how this broke. He probably fell asleep and rolled over on top of it and doesn't remember that. I am super happy I bought the 3 year no fault warranty. Just a word to the wise, displays in general have gotten more fragile. Use care or buy a warranty (just be sure it's backed by the right kind of company).

This Toshiba notebook is Energy Star 4.0 certified and it is RoHS-compliant, effectively reducing the environmental impact by restricting the use of lead, mercury and certain other hazardous substances.
The Basics
Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 processor has a 2.0 GHz processor speed, fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
With two computational execution cores in a single processor, it provides greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:
Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

Hard Drive: The extra-large 400 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.

Memory: The 4 GB of installed RAM (PC6400, 2 x 2 GB) maximizes the capacity of this notebook, and it also offers an ultra-fast 800 MHz speed.

DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer Labelflash DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD±R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 6x for both DVD±R DL, 8x for both single-layer DVD±R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
With the Labelflash functionality, you can burn high-resolution, high-contrast pictures on the label side of DVD discs using the same laser used for data recording. Enjoy transparency and high-quality not found in traditional printable media. All you need is a Labelflash DVD disc to start labeling without a printer.

Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 86-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers a launch button for the Express CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous) as well as a volume control dial.
Screen, Video & Audio The 16-inch WXGA LCD has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels--perfect for watching movies in their intended 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the ATI Radeon HD 3650, which provides 512 MB of discrete graphics memory as well as up to 2301 MB of total available graphics memory as allocated by Windows Vista. ATI Radeon HD 3600 Series graphics processors have breakthrough efficiency, with phenomenal performance-per-watt and energy-saving features. Advance to the next generation of gaming with superior performance, more lifelike graphics, superb lighting and support for the latest Microsoft DirectX 10.1. Smooth edges, sharp images, and complex facial and character animations make for an exceptional gaming experience that will keep you immersed for hours.
This notebook also features an integrated audio card and two Harman Kardon stereo speakers.
Networking, Connectivity & Expansion Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Intel Wireless 5100AGN Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments).
It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features.
It comes with an HDMI video output, which extends full 1080p support to HD displays as well as provides uncompressed digital audio and video via a single cable. Here's the full list of connection options:
4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (including 1 eSATA/USB combo port)
1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
Digital video out: HDMI
Analog video out: VGA and S-Video

I've had the Asus Maximus & Asus P5Q Deluxe and I have to say that Rampage Gene ii is the miles ahead of these two when it comes to overclocking and rock solid performance. I've been using now for a 1 month with OCZ Tri-Channel 1840MHz ram-- not once has my system crashed and I leave it on all day and night. It's great. I've been OC'ing my I7 chip at 3GHz and ram at 1600MHz 7-7-7-20 non stop. Not one hic-up. Plus you get more room in your case. I love it!!!

Toshiba Satellite A505-S6973 16.0-Inch Laptop - Black/Grey Review

Toshiba Satellite A505-S6973 16.0-Inch Laptop - Black/Grey
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this for my wife to replace a 4-year-old Acer. Ordered last night and got it this morning...
Right off the bat, the huge screen size mesmerized me. Migrating from a 14" to this with a much better quality screen was a pleasure to the eyes.
The system booted up quickly for the first time but I had to do LOTS and LOTS of updates including SP1. Toshiba never stops short of putting bloatware in its laptops sadly. But about 2 hours of "cleaning" made the laptop breath a lot easier...
The web cam sliding panel on the screen is annoying and I haven't found a way to completely disable it yet.
Overall, on looks I give it a solid 5 stars. I got the black one. It's shiny and very good-looking. It's a bit on the heavy side at over 7 lbs but that was totally expected.
The keys on keyboard are very comfortably spaced and are very responsive. The 10-key is a HUGE plus. The mouse is very tactile and responds great to the touch of the fingertips. It's supposed to allow multi-finger touch as well I think, but haven't had a chance to mess around with that yet.
It also comes with instructions as to how request your free copy of the Windows 7 upgrade. You can do so through Toshiba's web site.
The bottom of the laptop does not get nearly as hot as the older Acer used to, so that's a plus.
My first laptop ever was Toshiba Satellite (that was n years ago!) and only if I had kept that one and I could put the side by side... what a world of difference.
I left the BEST feature (in my opinion and so far) for last: The speakers are THE BOMB!!! They are hands down the best speakers on any laptop I have ever seen/owned. I owned another Toshiba that I bought from the retailer that sells things in bulk and it also had very loud speakers for a laptop but this laptop's speakers are both LOUD and FANTASTIC quality. The harman/kardon label says it all. Indeed one of the best features so far...
Again, it's been only 1 day and I spent most of it getting rid of the bloatware, downloading numerous VISTA updates, and installing many of the software she uses, so I didn't get to play with it much. But overall, I am loving it, and most importantly she's been truly enjoying it so far.
One little annoying feature I could've lived without is the volume buttons' system beep. These touch-sensitive buttons (located on the top right corner of the keyboard) are very responsive, but by default they produce a very annoying system beep every time one or the other is touched. I found through the Sound settings in Control Panel an option that let me turn that off which improved my experience with the volume buttons 100%. Before, sometimes after holding the + or - button for a few second, I guess because the annoying system beep itself was glitchy, it'd get "stuck" and would continue to beep even after I let go... That's resolved now that I turned off the system beep associated with it. The touch buttons now function the way they ought to. The buttons are lit so when you touch one or the other, the light goes off for each touch indicating the volume is going up or down one notch. No need for the buzzing system beep... Anyhow, thought to share this...

VERY IMPORTANT-----READ!!!!
Last night, as my wife was using the laptop, it just died.... literally, the whole screen went out.... The power button and battery button were both on; the hard drive light was off; the indicators right below the screen (top of the keyboard) were all off; the power button was fully lit. The fan (yes, it actually has a fan... I found it, but it's SUPER quiet) was functioning but the keyboard didn't seem to respond....... Long story short after troubleshooting for at least 45 minutes and getting nowhere, I called the tech support. It was a call center overseas but the response was quick and tech seemed knowledgeable enough I guess; troubleshooting steps were exactly same as what I had already tried...... sadly, he declared the laptop dead at 10:46 p.m... Cause of death: Unknown (hardware related!). So the tech support tells me I have to ship it to their depot... nothing is done overnight! They would ship the empty box -- ground shipping --, then I'd ship it back to them -- again GROUND --, then it'd take them 7 to 10 business days to repair, and then they'd ship it back to me -- GROUND! I am sorry, but my poor Sony laptop after 10 or so months of heavy use, started having problems with its Wi-Fi card; long story short, I had my laptop picked up, repaired, and sent back to me within 5 business days good as new.
Back to this review, Amazon at the end saved the day... They overnighted one for me last night and I'll have the brand new laptop tomorrow, and then I have to send them this one back... just like that. So as of right now, I am disappointed with Toshiba's overall customer service.... The laptop was doing fantastic, and I have no idea why it died so suddenly... but it did and it's a done deal.. Moral of the story: 1) Sometimes you just end up getting a lemon 2) You get you what you pay for. With the money I bought my Sony laptop I could've bought 6 (I am not joking) of these laptops.... and neither their service nor their product has ever stopped short of being perfect... I am just sayin'...

Dual-Core Processing PowerThe Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 processor has a 2.1 GHz processor speed, fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.

With the Labelflash functionality, you can burn high-resolution, high-contrast pictures on the label side of DVD discs using the same laser used for data recording. Enjoy transparency and high-quality not found in traditional printable media. All you need is a Labelflash DVD disc to start labeling without a printer.

Integrated Webcam with Face Recognition Capabilities A 1.3 megapixel digital web camera built into the LCD's bezel lets you quickly snap photos and participate in live video chats. The integrated webcam does more than just video chats. It includes Toshiba Face Recognition capabilities--the ultimate hands-free, hassle-free way to log onto your laptop. Intel DP55SB Desktop Board (LGA1156, DDR3) Review

Intel DP55SB Desktop Board (LGA1156, DDR3)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Intel DP55SB motherboard; It is part of my first computer build. I am fairly young so it did take me a while to carefully choose and buy this motherboard XD I had trouble running the new build. The system was dead. After testing out the power supply, I wasn't sure whether the problem lay with the motherboard or the i5-750 processor.
I was impatient as any other person would be and decided to ask Amazon for a replacement of the mobo. But the night before I was planning to send back the items I tried them again. Tested the board and CPU on the bench. Ahh... It turns out the CPU was not seated properly. Tested the board and the CPU in the case with everything connected. Again, dead. Starting plugging and unplugging cords. Oh damn, for some reason I cannot connect the fans to both the power supply and the board. Hey, I'm no computer wiz and I have no idea why... Anyways the case was alive! It was sheer happiness at this accomplishment, building your own computer!
So now onto the board itself, it is Micro-ATX, therefore it does give room for additional fans and stuff... Yet it still delivers the same goodies as its daddy, the DP55KG. Note that it just has less PCI slots. Bluetooth? Haven't tried yet even though that's the reason I saved up for this board. Though the abundant USB ports are good as well as the HD audio support. The Intel "Desktop Control Center" is a must for overclocking and such, its like a cool-looking bios.
In conclusion, please don't give up on any motherboard and deem it as defective when your new pc does not turn on. Mess around with the cables and such, make sure the processor is seated properly, and don't curse at the mobo =D. It supports SLI if you're into that stuff, overall the DP55SB is definitely a reliable motherboard. Oh by the way, it only supports certain type of memory (DDR3 1066/1333 MHZ). Just check the Intel site for the recommended memory modules. Cheers!

ASUS Striker II Formula LGA775 Nvidia 780i DDR2-1066 ATX Motherboard Review

ASUS Striker II Formula LGA775 Nvidia 780i DDR2-1066 ATX Motherboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this origianlly knowing it would be good from the beginning - I have been using Asus boards in computers I have been building for the last 5 years now - and they keep getting better.
Quick history of me for a second. I own a small computer company hand building around 8-15 computers a month. I have tried all the brands out there - and the two I have always been proud to work with were Gigabyte , and Asus. Recently alot of my Asus machines have been dominating my Gigabyte built machines on all my performance benchmarks - so I have decided to go with Asus exclusivly - for now at least. I have worked with many MSI , Abit , Evga , Intel , Biostar boards ect. , but none of them lived up to the performance of the new Asus boards out there. I am a major overclocker and performance enthusiast - I test M-boards, CPU's, and video cards to thier absolute limits to see what they are capable of, and for how long - stability is very important. So with that being said - lets get back to the review.
.
The motherboard installs nicely , comes with a beautifully designed heat sink for the north and south bridges - if you have a clear side case - the heat sink has a glowing ROP " republic of gamers " light attached to the heatsink glow beautifully all the time even when the board is off.
.
Overclocking is amazing on this board - I had a Core2 6700 which is 2.66ghz upto 3.2 stable with a upgraded heatsink and fan on the CPU , had a Core2 6850 which is 3.0ghz upto 3.8 stable using the same heatsink which was a Zalman 9700 " about $50 ".
.
I was running the toughest game in the PC world Crysis - and this board overclocked at 3.8, fan cooled ran the game stable for 2 hours no problems - and the CPU load during this game was between 75%-95% on both cores - it also stayed completly stable on the same overclock setting with a cpu benchmark running for 24 hours straight.
.
The new nvidia 780 " chipset " drivers allow you to take both lan ports on the board and sort of " SLI " or double them up to give a more stable and high end bandwidth for online gaming, and downloading - I noticed at least a 25% increase on all my internet reaction/ping speed while in this double lan mode - my pings are usually around 20-26ms , and ended up around 8-12ms after the switch to dual mode - very nice addition.
.
The PCIx audio card that comes with this motherboar is outstanding , I had it hooked up to a home reciever and watching blu-ray movies - and every sound was amazing - excitingly clear !!!!
.
This board is Tri SLI certified - meaning 3 video cards can be hooked up simultaniously. It has 2 PCIx 2.0 ports and a PCIx 16x , which is about the same thing a 2.0 - but is what allows the chipset to respond accordingly to 3 cards installed - gives you a 2.8x or " 280% " performance increase over a single card - the PCIx 2.0 ports are the new big deal - good to have them for future proofing your system. The old SLI motherboards with 2 16x PCIx slots couldnt even handle running 2 video card at full mperformance - the second video card only gave you about a 50% increase in performance - the new 2.0 ports allow full bandwidth giving you a 90%+ increase with the only bottleneck being the CPU but if you have the top CPU you will get near 100% increase.
.
This board also supports the new 45nm CPU's - so all the new CPU;s comming out are completly compatible.
.
The free game "Company of heroes opposing fronts" is a really nice addtion with this board as well.
.
Overall , I am very happy with this boards features and performance - not sure how the other reviewer had heating problems with his northbridge but mine are running very nicely - and I have 3 of them hooked up here.
Hope this review helps - good luck.

Before buying this laptop I had bought one from Gateway and it gave me so many problems that I couldn't stand it. I returned it to the store and my only other option for the same price was this laptop. I absolutely love it! Its 100x sturdier than the Gateway and much better looking with its lightup "HP" symbol and cool design. Also, the performance is just as good.
PROS
-durability
-style
-speed
-price
-hardware
-audio quality(high definition)
-ports (HDMI, eSATA, VGA, USB)
-comes with a remote
-battery life (over 2 hours of heavy use)
CONS
-runs hot
-seems to be a little buggy (video card driver crashes every once in a while but recovers itself after a few seconds. Reinstalling driver didn't fix the problem)
-there is no program that comes with the computer or from HP that allows the webcam settings to be changed (resolution, quality, etc)Overall I LOVE this laptop though and I'm glad that I bought it regardless of its flaws. The value is amazing!

I happen to use eSata external drives quite a bit. Amazon's comparison chart indicates that this board has an eSata port in the back. IT DOES NOT. This is not the end of the world but for a board of this caliber, I didn't even think for a minute it wouldn't have eSata. Even the older P6T had it. But thank goodness it still has a PS2 connection for my 12-year-old Dell keyboard from back when I was in college! Just kidding...seriously Asus, in your newest version you got rid of IDE, floppy connections and eSata but you hold on to a PS2 connection?? Who actually makes these decisions? All in all an excellent motherboard. I really can't understand why anyone would need a second LAN port and pay a 70-dollar premium for the "premium" version of this product. So for most builders this is an awesome product for a very reasonable price.

Acer Aspire 4810TZ-4011 Timeline 14.0-Inch Laptop Review

Acer Aspire 4810TZ-4011 Timeline 14.0-Inch Laptop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using the Acer Timeline (14 inch, Aspire 4810TZ-4011) since yesterday evening and so far so good. Here are my first impressions:
1. The delivery was quick and packaging was good.
2. The looks of the laptop are fantastic. Love the isolation-type keyboard. The screen hinges could have been more solid but for a lightweight machine appear ok.
3. The eject button for the CD, various ports, the card reader, are all very suitably positioned.
4. The colours of the screen are beautiful. There are setup options to adjust those to taste, but I did not need to use them.
5. The laptop was easy to set up. I loaded the battery for about an hour before starting, perhaps an overkill, and was rewarded with a blue light coming from beneath the touchpad.
6. Setting up Vista for the first time was much quicker than my last XP setup on a netbook. Feels natural so far.
7. Soon after startup I was prompted to create recovery disks, and made two DVDs with the system and one with software.
8. There is (was) a lot of preloaded software. I spent a good deal of time finding out what it does (on Google) and cleaning most of it up.
9. People who have complained from performance issues maybe should take care to remove the redundant backup software (two or three of those pre-installed?!), the trial antivirus and other FUD nonsense.
10. I registerted for a FREE copy of Windows 7 for Timeline owners, to be shipped in October (woot!).
11. Set up Skype (after combating for a while with the firewall settings of Vista), and made a call -- the sound is good, the mic is well positioned, the camera works fine, even better after peeling off the protective plastic sheet :)
12. Tested a youtube video in HD and it did not play smooth, which was a disappointment.
Comparing this to my 4y old FS, the Acer Timeline feels about as solid, a lot more silent, cooler, lighter by more than 2 pounds, with 6 times the RAM, 4 times the battery time, and a newer processor -- clearly an upgrade in every aspect.

Intel DG45FC Media Series G45 Mini-ITX DDR2 800 Intel Graphics HDMI+DVI 1333MHz FSB LGA775 Desktop Board - Retail Review

Pros: Nice set up, very small, no old tech PS2 or VGA (of course you can buy an adapter). tons of USB and you can still add more from the MOBO, DDR2 800 up to 4GB, 4 SATAs, RAID support.
Cons: this MOBO is hot, hot, hot!!! Make sure you have a good air circulation in the case. I looked at the temperature in the BIOS and it was worrisome: ICH at 80 C!!!
Space is really tight but that is to be expected for a mini-itx.
Other Thoughts:
1- Drivers (for audio, LAN, and Video) are not out yet for Linux install.
2- I have intel cpu E8500 on it, it works well but the heat sink would bend the MOBO. My advice is to get plastic or metal screws and make your own heat sink screws. Also, don't buy the retention bracket (the X form) to attach FHS underneath the MOBO, there is a chip in the way next to one of the hole.
3- Here is what I have put together and works perfectly with VISTA 64bit: HD Scorpio WD1600BEKT 2.5", Memory G.Skill F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ - (2 X 2 Gb), 8x DVD DL/RW Sony NEC Optiarc Slim SATA Model, and PicoPSU-120 with 4pins (very important because the MB will not work without it) from mini box.

You may need a couple of extra cables and such to build a machine with this board but once you get your computer up and running you will most likely be impressed by what you put together for under 200 bucks. I think I actually built a machine for about 210.00 including a used case and PSU w/o monitor.
My setup has 2 GB of Ram (the max amount), 60 GB SATA Hard Disk. Also, I used a 20 pin PSU to 24 pin Motherboard converter cable as the pins did not match up when trying to plug the stock 20 pin connector into the motherboard--the instructions say this is possible. I use it mainly as a media server and for watching movies through s-video output to my TV set.
Here are a few really nice bits I found out about the D945GCLF2 board after I got it home:
It has a vga and s-video output (no DVI) which can be used in dual display configuration. If you have a TV with an s-video input this can come in handy.
Each of the Atom 330's cores have hyperthreading which amounts to 4 logical processors detected by your operating system--the atom 330
along with it's 945 GPU make the computer run snappy.
Unlike some of the reviews of this board state, it can be used for more than just web browsing. No, you can't play Call of Duty but many 3d games that are a couple of years old run very well. I tried Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness and Oni (which is way old) and they both ran flawlessly.
Ubuntu with Compiz looks stunning.
I put the good stuff first because I really don't have any problems with my computer but here are some glitches I had to work around:
The s-video output has a vertical scrolling issue when the computer
first turns on but clears up when your OS loads. I still can't read the grub boot menu from my TV set. The VGA output has no issues, however. This s-video flicker problem could be solved by a bios update from intel (if we ever get one) in the future.
The board comes with a driver disk for windows so installing 2000/xp/vista is easy. Installing Ubuntu proved to be less than stupidly easy
(it often is stupidly easy these days). The main problem I had was with getting the dual display working with s-video and getting the OS to recognize the two Hyper Threading cores in the atom 330. I solved the
multi core problem by installing Ubuntu 64 bit. Ask a Linux wizard why the 64 bit distro is different in that regard, all I know is that it now recognizes 4 logical processors and I am satisfied with the result.
All and all This machine is pure It's cheap, its small, and it works
better than it should.

Intel D975XBX2KR Intel Core 2 Duo Ready Socket 775 ATX Motherboard Review

Intel D975XBX2KR Intel Core 2 Duo Ready Socket 775 ATX Motherboard
Average Reviews:

I really like the Intel D975XBX2 Motherboard, mainly because it's compatible with both the older Pentium D and the newer Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors. I also respect the quality of the on-board networking and audio support. I use Fedora Linux and when the audio "just works" it's a real blessing. When I need to build a new box, this is the only board I use. The only other thing I'd mention is there is no on-board support for Ultra-ATA/133 drives, so be aware of that.

I'm fan of Intel products. During many years I've been use motherboards of this brand. Without no doubt this is the better of all of them. This motherboard is for extreme and hard uses. If that not is your case It's a waste of money (there are many others Intel options less expensive).

Good MB, check specs carefully. I've seen people whine that something was
"wrong" because they did not know what they bought.
(Check the RAM specs for speed.)
ALWAYS flash the BIOS of any new MB. Or at least check to see what they offer.
Intel is active in keeping the bugs out of them, but you have to be a little pro-active and "help"...

EVGA 132-BL-E758-TR x58 SLI Mainboard with Intel LGA 1366 chipset Review

EVGA 132-BL-E758-TR x58 SLI Mainboard with Intel LGA 1366 chipset
Average Reviews:

Just finished building this out with an i7 920, and am really pleased so far. It's going to be a monster gaming machine, and runs Ubuntu (64 bit) with no issues. On-board RAID card is nice, though you'll want to ditch the stock CPU cooler if you plan on doing any overclocking.
A few things to be aware of:
- There are some issues with component layout. Right under that big heat sink near the chip is where they decided to place both CPU fan and board power sockets. It's a really bad place, as it's hard to get to and places cables near a component known to get hot.
- The audio plug is between the two PCIe slots, which will be a cable routing challenge if you're doing SLI with monster video cards.
- Not a big fan of how they did the 9 SATA ports (10 really, if you count the eSata port on the backplane). Sata 0-5 are run off the Intel southbridge, and SATA 6-7 and 8-9 are run off separate chipsests. SATA 7 is a port in the middle of the board, designed to drive a port on the front of the case. Anyway, you can only RAID each of the chipsets, meaning any big array you build will need to run off 0-5. There are also pauses during start for each chipset, which is annoying.
- A minor annoyance, but this board takes a while to POST (~20s).
Some things I really like:
- There are power, reset, and CMOS reset switches on the board, so you don't need to make case hookups while you debug stuff.
- There a 2-digit LED on the board, which shows error codes for anything wrong during POST, then turns into a CPU temperature monitor.
- Overclocker's dream. Control over all multipliers voltages needed to take your chip well past 4GHz.
My rig:
This board, with i7 920 (modest overclock to 3.5GHz)
Zalman CNPS9900LED Ultra Quiet CPU Cooler, with Arctic Silver 5
CORSAIR XMS3 12GB (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
GIGABYTE GV-N275UD-896I GeForce GTX 275 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Video
3 x Western Digital RE3 WD1002FBYS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
(2 running in RAID1, the spare running as a scratch).
COOLER MASTER HAF 922 RC-922M-KKN1-GP Black Steel + Plastic and Mesh Bezel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Very nice!
