Toshiba NB305-N600 10.1-Inch Netbook (Blue) Review

Toshiba NB305-N600 10.1-Inch Netbook (Blue)
Average Reviews:

Dual core processor with hyper-threading. Much faster than the single core atom netbooks. I own a N255 as well as this one, and the NB305-N600 blows the N255 away. I have a 2GB Crucial memory stick coming this week, would have been nicer if Toshiba would have just had 2GB installed from the factory.
It's been a month since I have owned this netbook. I LOVE it, I use it daily now and don't even bother with my desktop anymore. It does everything I need it to, email, internet, itunes, pdf files, basic stuff. I installed 2GB Crucial stick and that helped quite a bit. Purchase the memory direct from Crucial... Amazon doesn't sell the right stick at this time.
The wireless N is great. No problems with it connecting, it does so very quickly too! Raise the screen/lid from hibernate/suspend/whatever, enter password, within 5-6 seconds I am online.
Be forewarned that Toshiba has a LOT of pre-installed software that is pretty much useless to most users. I plan to install a Intel SSD drive and full copy of Windows 7 in the next few weeks.
I am getting about 6-7 hours battery life, but I did increase the screen brightness to a realistic level.

ASUS Striker II Formula LGA775 Nvidia 780i DDR2-1066 ATX Motherboard Review

ASUS Striker II Formula LGA775 Nvidia 780i DDR2-1066 ATX Motherboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this origianlly knowing it would be good from the beginning - I have been using Asus boards in computers I have been building for the last 5 years now - and they keep getting better.
Quick history of me for a second. I own a small computer company hand building around 8-15 computers a month. I have tried all the brands out there - and the two I have always been proud to work with were Gigabyte , and Asus. Recently alot of my Asus machines have been dominating my Gigabyte built machines on all my performance benchmarks - so I have decided to go with Asus exclusivly - for now at least. I have worked with many MSI , Abit , Evga , Intel , Biostar boards ect. , but none of them lived up to the performance of the new Asus boards out there. I am a major overclocker and performance enthusiast - I test M-boards, CPU's, and video cards to thier absolute limits to see what they are capable of, and for how long - stability is very important. So with that being said - lets get back to the review.
.
The motherboard installs nicely , comes with a beautifully designed heat sink for the north and south bridges - if you have a clear side case - the heat sink has a glowing ROP " republic of gamers " light attached to the heatsink glow beautifully all the time even when the board is off.
.
Overclocking is amazing on this board - I had a Core2 6700 which is 2.66ghz upto 3.2 stable with a upgraded heatsink and fan on the CPU , had a Core2 6850 which is 3.0ghz upto 3.8 stable using the same heatsink which was a Zalman 9700 " about $50 ".
.
I was running the toughest game in the PC world Crysis - and this board overclocked at 3.8, fan cooled ran the game stable for 2 hours no problems - and the CPU load during this game was between 75%-95% on both cores - it also stayed completly stable on the same overclock setting with a cpu benchmark running for 24 hours straight.
.
The new nvidia 780 " chipset " drivers allow you to take both lan ports on the board and sort of " SLI " or double them up to give a more stable and high end bandwidth for online gaming, and downloading - I noticed at least a 25% increase on all my internet reaction/ping speed while in this double lan mode - my pings are usually around 20-26ms , and ended up around 8-12ms after the switch to dual mode - very nice addition.
.
The PCIx audio card that comes with this motherboar is outstanding , I had it hooked up to a home reciever and watching blu-ray movies - and every sound was amazing - excitingly clear !!!!
.
This board is Tri SLI certified - meaning 3 video cards can be hooked up simultaniously. It has 2 PCIx 2.0 ports and a PCIx 16x , which is about the same thing a 2.0 - but is what allows the chipset to respond accordingly to 3 cards installed - gives you a 2.8x or " 280% " performance increase over a single card - the PCIx 2.0 ports are the new big deal - good to have them for future proofing your system. The old SLI motherboards with 2 16x PCIx slots couldnt even handle running 2 video card at full mperformance - the second video card only gave you about a 50% increase in performance - the new 2.0 ports allow full bandwidth giving you a 90%+ increase with the only bottleneck being the CPU but if you have the top CPU you will get near 100% increase.
.
This board also supports the new 45nm CPU's - so all the new CPU;s comming out are completly compatible.
.
The free game "Company of heroes opposing fronts" is a really nice addtion with this board as well.
.
Overall , I am very happy with this boards features and performance - not sure how the other reviewer had heating problems with his northbridge but mine are running very nicely - and I have 3 of them hooked up here.
Hope this review helps - good luck.

HP G71-340US 17.3-Inch Black/Silver Laptop - Up to 4 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium) Review

HP G71-340US 17.3-Inch Black/Silver Laptop - Up to 4 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)
Average Reviews:

This is a great laptop for the money and I would buy it again.
Pro's:
Light compared to some other laptops (LED vs. LCD screens usually)
Screen is very bright and easy to read
HDMI allows output to HDTV (also for using Media Center on the HDTV)
4GB RAM
Good battery life (it was running for 3.5+ hours the other day)
10-Key number pad
5-1 card reader (for plopping in an SD card from a digital camera/camcorder)
Con's:
Fingerprints are highly visible on laptop cover -- glossy black
Keyboard layout is cramped with certain keys (arrow keys, delete key)
Speakers do not sound as good as my 3 year old Toshiba laptop
No physical button for volume control -- it's software controlled via keyboard/Windows.
Addt'l comments:
I also have a Lenovo T61p and the HP is lighter, has better battery life, and a softer keyboard (which I prefer-the Lenovo/Thinkpad line is too stiff for me). The Lenovo performs slightly better in every day tasks (faster hard drive & cpu) and a fair bit faster in graphics intensive applications (e.g. games).

Toshiba Satellite L505-GS5037 TruBrite 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

Toshiba Satellite L505-GS5037 TruBrite 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Not too long ago, I needed to buy a new laptop computer since my old Dell computer nearly died. (There was some sort of hard drive problem that would only allow me to start up in 'safe mode.') After scouring Amazon for several days, I decided upon this Toshiba Satellite computer. It seemed like the best value for the money I was willing to spend.
Pros:
Big screen -- This is great for watching movies in true 16:9 ratio. The screen is also really bright so you won't miss any details.
It has a number pad -- I really like being able to use 10-key typing to enter numbers in documents and web sites. Having a number pad is surprisingly necessary.
Fast start-up / Fast wake-up -- This computer has enough resources to start up quickly from an off state. The start-up feels like it could be a little bit faster, but, again, it is still significantly faster than my old Dell. I usually don't put my computers in hibernation mode when I walk away for any extended period of time, so I can't critique that feature of this computer.
Stylish -- This computer looks sleek and sophisticated. It is a real joy to look at.
Generous system resources -- This computer has 4GB of RAM and 500GB of hard disk capacity. It also has those new Intel processors that feature "hyper-threading" technology. Since Windows 7 is a system hog, a new laptop should at least have 6GB of RAM, but 4GB seems to be just fine for this machine. I can switch quickly between programs, start programs quickly, and end them quickly, too. A 500GB hard disk is just an astoundingly huge amount of storage space. There is more than enough space for photos and movies.
The mouse-pad -- I don't know how Toshiba did it, but the mouse-pad is the coolest feature of the laptop. The mouse-pad looks like it was spray-painted on top of the plastic shell. It also works really well AND it offers multi-touch functionality. If you need to increase the size of the font on a web page, all you do is spread two fingers on the mouse-pad. It is actually pretty damn cool.
Cons:
Atrocious speakers -- OK, the worst feature in this computer are the absolutely horrible speakers. The sound that comes from them is tinny and without depth. I find it interesting, to say the least, that Toshiba would have a mid-range computer with decent hardware specs but include insufficient speakers. Whoduthunk?
Not enough ports / Bad port locations -- Again, for the amount of hardware specs this computer has, Toshiba only included 2 USB ports. The laptop shell is spacious enough to include 4 USB ports without any problems. My old Dell laptop had 4 USB ports. Also, the USB ports and power DC-in locations are really inconvenient: They are located on the right side of the machine. Most people are right-handed BUT protruding cords interferes with desk space which, in turn, limits the space that most people might have because of the locations of the ports. The USB ports and DC-in power port should be re-located to the back of the machine.
Other details:
The computer is finished with a matte black plastic shell. Just so you know, matte (any color) shows off every single speck of dust and finger print! After I type this review I'm going to wipe down the whole machine with a clean cotton cloth. Also, the keys are matte black, too, so they really show off finger prints! Don't laptop manufacturers know that laptops are dirty machines?! This laptop also weighs 6lbs. For me, it isn't heavy, but for others it might be too heavy.
Final thoughts:
Overall, I really like this laptop. It has plenty of resources for a multitude of applications. I can play some graphically intense games without too many problems. It has plenty of processing speed, RAM, and hard disk space for just about anything you can throw at it. This is a great all-around mid-range laptop. The only reason I didn't give this laptop a 5-star rating is because there simply are not enough USB ports, and the locations of the ports should be on the back of the machine instead of the right side. The speakers are also sub-par for what could have been included.

Zotac IONITX-A-U Atom N330 Dual Core 90-Watt PSU WiFi ITX Intel Motherboard Review

Zotac IONITX-A-U Atom N330 Dual Core 90-Watt PSU WiFi ITX Intel Motherboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been waiting for this motherboard for a long time; finally a MythTV frontend which can quietly play high definition video and sip electricity while doing so. And one with so many ports on the back: HDMI, DVI and VGA for video; TOSLink Coax, SPDIF optical, HDMI and analog for audio. Gigabit Ethernet. Plenty of USB ports and one eSATA port. A feast of port flexibility.
While people have been talking about the Wake on USB function of recent revisions of this board; I find the Wake on LAN BIOS option more interesting. You can get an iPhone or other smartphone app which can wake the device via WiFi, making it easy to keep the computer in a low power state and only pulling Watts when needed.
My setup:
I've installed the 64-bit version of Mythbuntu 9.10 on a 60 GB Seagate Momentus laptop drive I had lying around.
2GB of PNY brand RAM allow me to allocate half a GB to the video card (BIOS setting); recommended for maximum video performance.
And a small Mini-ITX case complete the very simple hardware assembly.
I also installed XBMC, and that seems responsive and beautiful.
I first used the VGA connector for video, and the coax port for digital audio, but in the end, I ended up using an HDMI switch and getting both audio and video over that port which worked well.
I removed the included WiFi card, as I will be using hard wired Ethernet and would prefer to not include whatever minor Wattage the little card draws in standby.
I would not run this board fanless. I played a 1080i MPEG2 over the air video on it without a case and my infrared thermometer read the GPU temperature at 60°C, which is fairly toasty. Still it should get by with minimal slow fans. There are a large number of suggestions on the Internet to lower the voltage of the included fan via the purchase of a third party fan controller. I was unable to use Linux utilities to monitor the temperature, but the NVDIA control panel does give the temperature of the GPU: when playing 720p video with a fan on, the GPU was at 49°C, which is not bad. When using VDPAU decoding in the GPU, the CPU is showing only about 15% utilization regardless of content.
I measured the electrical usage of the system as a whole with a Kill-A-Watt. Hibernate: 2W, Sleep: 3W, Idle: 25W, playing DVD image: 26W, playing 720p MPEG2 video: 28W, playing 1080i MPEG2 video: 31W.
I have not tried Flash 10.1 yet, but have hopes the hardware acceleration will be there for watching Hulu videos. Also, have not tried Hulu desktop yet.
[Update: Because I was given a comparably spec'd Zotac MAG Intel Atom N330, NVIDIA ION, 2 GB DDR2, 160 GB HD, eSATA, HDMI HD-ND01-U Mini PC - No OS as a HTPC, I repurposed this motherboard in a larger case, MI-008 Tower Black P4 Chassis with 250W Itx Psu+sata Power Supply, as a home server, a function for which it is adequate given a case with room for an optical drive and a large desktop hard drive. With the limitation that the power supply limits you to 3 SATA internal devices;any further storage expansion will have to be done via the one remaining eSATA connector. Also, it would be nice to have a PCI slot of some sort (and no the mini-PCIe slot does not count as it is reputed to only work with the included wireless card). Still even with two fans keeping the case cool, it makes for a reasonably quiet and energy efficient server, certainly more cost efficient than the noisy Pentium 4 desktop it is replacing. I would not have bought this for a server and would have gone with a cheaper board without a power supply. As it is, I had to remove and shelve an unused power supply out of the new case. The new server is now busy recording TV shows (via networked HDHomerun tuners), serving files, hosting a Subversion server, and occasionally serving as a desktop computer when I find myself in the laundry room.

HP Pavilion G71-340us 17.3-Inch Laptop - Black (Manufacturer Refurbished) Review

HP Pavilion G71-340us 17.3-Inch Laptop - Black (Manufacturer Refurbished)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought my G71 refurb through another vendor, I've only had it a week, but it works! Set my daughter up with her own user account. She's seven, comes home from school and has no problems with the G71. Syncing it with my wi-fi was simple. I bought a new desktop last year, and I was able to use it's Office '07 license to activate the Office '07 version on the G71. (I think a Microsoft license can be activated on three personal use pc's)
The screen is big & bright. The keypad has a friendly solid feel to it. I've seen other owners of new G71's talk about how quiet and unremarkable the speakers are, I don't have that issue with this refurb. It's not a boombox AND laptop, it's a laptop with built-in speakers, and that's what it sounds like. In fact, my daughter was playing an online game, and I had to turn the volume down, because I was trying to watch tv, and the redundant game music was driving me nuts.
I've put almost 2,000 music files on it, my photo-editing software, ftp, html, swish programs, and I'm not having any problems with them.
The only problem I am having is getting Win7 to fit my own photo as wallpaper, and not stretch it to fit the layout of the 17.3 screen. (but I feel confident that if I google the question, I can find an online resolution - for now I just crop my pic in my photo editor, and post it - easy peasy)
If the unit goes bad, I can adjust this review, but so far I'm happy having bought the refurb, and not the new one. (who knows, maybe the refurb version has better audio than the new version - or maybe not)
**Nine months later, still satisfied. The current price calculation on amazon is way too much for a refurb, so shop around. The speaker situation is still kind of quiet, but I do own headphones, and the volume through the headphones is loud. It's just the onboard speaker system that is quiet. I would buy this laptop again, if I had to do it all over.
