Dear Mr. Hurd, On April 27 at 2 PM I received a Pavilion Elite Desktop that was defective and "dead in the box." I've been buying computers since 1992 and can accept this but not what followed. (Repair Order #803.........)
From 6 PM to midnight I talked to people in India whose English was barely intelligible making the process extremely difficult. They had me doing tests over and over and sitting on endless hold in between. This was incompetence. Around midnight I was asked to do a "System Restore?" and told by your Tech he would call back---he never did and I was to find that this is common.
On April 28, convinced that the problem was beyond the abilities of your offshore people and not wanting to go back to people I couldn't understand, who never called me back, and who put me on endless hold; I requested (per your guarantee) someone to make a housecall here in Seattle, which was denied. I tried to access American support to no avail and ended up calling Sales--at least they spoke English. They essentially told me "I was on my own" and I thought of the phrase--"Abandon hope all ye who enter here"
On April 29 I got your Filipino station and repeated the same process for hours. One particularly grating aspect was listening ad nausea to your parroted message about being able to get home service while I languished on endless hold. This is deceptive and a rotten lie. My machine was brand new----a fact that wasn't even noticed by your techs until the third day. After 20 hrs of my personal time had been chewed up, the dead machine was finally pronounced unfit and carted back by FedEx on April 30.
On May 1, in one final exhaustive attempt to throw salt in my wounds, I received an email double charging me, and my Visa card was billed an extra $50 to boot. Come on Mr. Hurd, you are a great big Fortune 500 company, how hard is it to fix these things.....things I would expect if this was a David Packard startup in his Palo Alto garage. Post Script---Yes there is a post script to all this. Hewlett-Packard again sent me a brand new machine---machine #2. After the initial setup, I couldn't get on the Internet. Once again I called your techs in India (Repair order #------858----). After about 5 hours, including a "face to face" and the usual endless tests, I went to bed. Since I wasn't willing to spend another 20 hours on the phone I sent the machine back for a refund. Two bad machines in a row strains the credulity and the bounds of coincidence, but your people were merely sanguine about it all.

The original deal was that I gave HP a price they advertised and they gave me an operational Core i7 machine or they would come out and do an in-house repair. I felt cheated. I got my money back but lost 25+hours of my personal time. Hewlett Packard is a good example of a giant global faceless octopus of a company with ubiquitous advertising, cheap prices and shoddy rubbish products. One of the sales guys told me that if HP used American techs it would add $400 to each machine----so that's why Apples cost more?! Believe me Mr. Hurd, gone are the days I'll do business with HP again.

(More customer reviews)This was bought back in late 2005 as a package deal: Computer, CRT monitor, and Lexmark Printer for about $350. A great deal. I ended up expanding to 2GB of RAM, which helped speed things up an eliminated some error messages. The only real beef I have with this computer is the sound. I noticed that, from the start, there was an echo in everything played out the speakers. This becomes pretty annoying. All the audible Windows programmable events have the echo. I imported and stored some MP3's on the hard drive, then played them using RealPlayer. I got the same echo. In fact, it actually sounds like what you're listening to (with regard to stereo) is L-R rather than L+R. That is, it sounds like what you're listening to is the difference between the stereo channels rather than the normal stereo sound tracks. I contacted eMachines and they recommended upgrading to another sound board ($80) which sounds like a bogus solution to me. I looked through the control panel settings for audio devices and I don't see anything that controls an echo effect or L+R/L-R options, so it looks like I'm going to have to spend $80 and hope a new sound board resolves the problems. Other than that, it's a functional computer system for a very reasonable price.

The BasicsFounded in 1998 and acquired by Gateway in early 2004, eMachines today is one of the largest vendors of PCs sold through U.S. retailers. With the T2862 Desktop PC, eMachines targets entry-level and undemanding consumers who want a desktop computer but can't justify the price of a high-end model and probably don't need one anyway. Featuring a cost-effective yet reasonably powerful CPU, minimal memory and mediocre 3D graphics performance, the unit is not designed for a top-level business environment or gaming den. But if word processing, personal finances, email and Internet surfing and CD burning are your priorities, the eMachines T2862 is a sensible and extremely affordable solution.
Processor At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Many entry-level desktops utilize "budget" processors such as an Intel Celeron, and that is indeed the case with this model. But this particular processor is a new and recently enhanced version of the venerable Celeron, nicknamed the Celeron D and carrying 256 KB of Level 2 cache and a 533 MHz system bus for perceptibly faster performance than Celerons manufactured prior to 2004. This is the second fastest Celeron currently on the market, a 2.66 GHz version that doesn't approach the raw data-churning speed of a high-end Pentium 4 but certainly holds its own against lower-end Pentiums and AMD Athlons.
Memory Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. eMachines has partnered this unit's processor with 256 MB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM main memory, the minimum recommended allotment for a modern PC. Thusly, the eMachines T2862 is not ideal for demanding multitasking sessions or ultra-complex applications in its stock form, though users may upgrade the memory (at additional cost) to a whopping 2 GB.
Video CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). A graphics controller with "dedicated" video memory is preferable to a controller that "shares" the system's main memory, as it better handles complex procedures. The eMachines T2862 is equipped with an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 video controller that is integrated on the motherboard and shares 64 MB of the system's main memory. Thusly, the unit is not intended for anyone who regularly works or plays with demanding 3D animations such as those found in the latest high-end games, unless they first purchase and install a separate graphics card. A display screen is not enclosed, thus allowing you to continue using your current monitor or select from today's many alternatives.
SoundAudio is produced via an AC 97-compatible chip integrated on the motherboard. AC-97 is today's most accepted entry-level PC audio standard. Though not as sophisticated as most standalone audio cards (its audio specs aren't as good and it supports limited speaker configurations), this integrated chipset is perfectly adequate for most stereo applications. eMachines will also enclose a pair of small desktop speakers for your listening enjoyment.
Hard DriveThe built-in 60 MB hard drive sports enough space for a typical home or home office situation or student setup. However, if you regularly load large applications, save large files, and maintain a sizeable multimedia or music collection, you may need to upgrade this drive, transfer files to a compact disc to free up room, or add another hard drive.
Optical DriveAn optical drive is essential in today's computing world. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can enjoy all of the above plus watch the same big budget DVD movies you watch on your home entertainment system. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can also "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of CDs).
The eMachines T2862 features a DVD/CD-RW drive that allows you to install applications from CD, play and burn music and data CDs, and play DVD movies. DVD burning is not possible unless you upgrade or replace this drive.
Connectivity and ExpansionThough designed for the budget conscious, the eMachines T2862 nevertheless sports all the standard amenities, and then some. Communication options include an Intel PRO 10/100Mbps integrated LAN for high-speed Internet and email access and a standard 56K modem for low-speed dial-up service. For reading memory cards from devices such as digital cameras and PDAs, the system features an 8-in-1 Digital Media Manager. And, with no less than five high-speed USB 2.0 ports at your disposal, you'll have plenty of places to plug your plug and play peripherals. eMachines has not included an IEEE 1394 FireWire port, most commonly used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders.
Operating System and SoftwareThe system features a surprisingly generous software package headed by Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system, Microsotf's Works 8.0 productivity suite, Microsoft's Money 2004 financial center and several useful multimedia and music utilities.
Keyboard and MouseA Standard eMachines Multimedia Keyboard and 2-button mouse (with scroll wheel) are enclosed.

Acer AX3910-U2032 Desktop (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I was very nervous ordering this because of the negative reviews, especially when it arrived in a hurry with only some brown paper in the box and no bubble wrap or anything! The computer itself though was well-packed in it's own box with styrofoam packing, etc. like a new computer should be.
Because of the reviews I was also anxious about the DVD drive so I tested it right away. I burned data disks, played movies, and then I used it to burn home movies which played beautifully on my TV (it comes with DVD making software), so I would say it's absolutely fine (I even tested it by burning one DVD that was +R and one that was -R! Both worked fine!). To open and close the DVD drive, you push a button and the door opens and then the tray pops out. I am a little nervous that with so many moving parts, something could break easily, but so far it's worked fine every time (I'm careful to push the button straight-on and not let the computer wobble). I think I would just not recommend this computer if you're going to share it with kids or people who are rough on computers.
The speed of this computer is awesome!!! Such a pleasure! I've never used Windows 7 before either and despite my prejudices against Vista (lol) I really like it and it was easy to learn without even reading anything! Also, this computer comes with a very nice mouse and keyboard - the action is very smoothe on both. The keys on the keyboard are very springy so I can type "softly" and not irritate my carpal tunnel syndrome and there are numerous shortcut buttons on top which I haven't even investigated yet. On the upper right corner of the keyboard there is a wheel which controls sound volume! The mouse is high quality too - nice delicate wheel which is easy on the fingers and a very smoothe and accurate cursor movement. This Acer also picked up the internet with no problem at all.
I could only get sound from the "Line Out" jack even though this says it has 5.1 surround sound, but when I looked it up online I read that surround sound only comes out if you're playing a DVD that is designed for that kind of output (and you have surround sound speakers, which I don't!). You can select "5.1 Surround Sound" and lots of other settings in Control Panel so I think it does work (and Device Manager recognized each jack when I plugged things in, telling me a device had just been plugged into an audio jack). The line out jack is great anyway - I'm getting lots of power for loud strong bass in my music and bright trebles! I have used the sound for internet radio, Skype phone calls, playing a regular DVD, and regular internet like YouTube videos and it is powerful - I can blast it VERY loudly if I want.
Overall I'd say this is a great computer - it's silent and very very fast; the graphics look gorgeous on my Dell flat screen computer monitor (which it recognized immediately; it also recognized my external hard drives, printer and scanner immediately too with no problems), the sound is powerful and crisp. Although it has a nice small footprint, there are plenty of USB jacks (9) for my needs. I would just say that if you get this computer, be gentle with the DVD door and I think you will be very happy!

Compaq Presario CQ5600F Desktop PC - Black Review

(More customer reviews)I specifically bought this computer for my kids to learn about computers and play online games. It was two twenty plus tax on special at fry's. I doubt I would have liked to pay more that three hundred for this.
For the purpose intended it is fine, plus I can check my email, search the web and write this review on Amazon :-)
I can actually watch TV through its media center (off my HDHomerun) without dropout at HD video so better than I thought it would be actually.
I would not try to run more than 2 applications and I doubt it would be useful for high end games and video editing etc but it's better than I thought.
Additionally I really like windows 7 x64 that it runs.
I doubt that I could make a computer for the components used in its manufacture. Plus the CPU is on an upgradable socket that later I could switch out for a core 2 Athlon - seen on sale for $30 at fry's (this runs a single core 170u).
So overall for the price I paid and use intended 4.5 out of 5.

On account of the bad reputation of Windows Vista, I kept my old klunker Compaq Windows XP machine until Windows 7 came out.
I got this HP Slimline and am very pleased. Got it with an hp 2009m monitor which seems to be the predominant monitor people tend to match it up with.The fact that I was using a very old klunky machine no doubt prejudices me in the direction of being pleased with the new machine. But for what it is worth I am indeed very pleased.
I pretty much just use the PC for web surfing- I suspect for games you might want a higher end one. I didn't realize when I bought this computer that it only has the VGA interface to the monitor, not the more advanced digital ones. For my uses of the PC the interface is fine, but if you use your PC for videos you might want to look into it further.
I am pleased that the machine boots up in about a minute, my old PC took about a half hour, possibly some of that was due to viruses or something.
Along with the PC I bought a copy of Microsoft Office Home and Student version, there is a discount if you buy it along with a new PC.
It is nice to have a computer that responds promptly, in contrast to my old PC which ran like molasses at times.
So, I am grading this computer on an easy curve because it doesn't take much for a PC to be infinitely better than my old klunker.
But, for what it's worth, I like this machine a lot.

(More customer reviews)I have done extensive research on numerous computer speakers, everything from the simple 2.0 to 5.1 surround sound configurations for the past 6 months. I ended buying these Gigaworks Series II 2.0 speakers. Why? Because I couldn't have spent my $100 on anything else better.
Delicated tweeters for your high notes, midrange drivers for your mids, and the BasXport on top of the speakers for them lows, and all in a small 2.0 system! A lot of speakers do not allow the user to adjust their treble and bass, these do. Not a bass person? Dial it down to 0 and turn up the treble, or max out on both and anything in between. That's what the dials are there for, because not everyone is content with preset one-off factory settings.
There are users who complaint about the bright blue light glaring at them when it is on, I don't think it is that bad unless you are sleeping with them on. Some users also said that the speakers don't do too well at high volumes, as in the sound start to become unclear/muffled. I say it is true somewhat, just try not to turn it up past 75% and you should be good. Even at that level it is loud enough to be heard in my entire house, you're not running a nightclub in your house afterall.

MSI AE1920-001US 18.5-Inch All-In-One Single Touch Screen PC - Black Review

(More customer reviews)I was really looking into the touch screen models for several years now. Finally got my hands on one and this one took the cake for me in terms of price and make up. I've been in need of a computer advancement in quite some time now and this one puts both my laptops and older desktop to shame with more storage and more functionality that I previously had. I love the idea of a wireless internet desktop because it takes away from the need to set up more cables although it's still an option. USB keyboard and mouse. I'm a righty on the mouse so it contoured nicely into my hand and the keyboard is ultra thin and light weight. Windows 7 capability is fairly neat.
I've not had very much experience with this version of Windows but it's made my data transfer/networking and Xbox 360/PS3 connections for media sharing much easier. I needed more storage and this delivers with 217.3 accessable GBs worth of memory. I was able to barely scratch the surface on the memory. Back up D drive has 149 GBs where as the standarded C drive sports 68.3 GBs. I'm not complaining. 18.5" display with multiple resolutions to choose from. Clear display and nice speaker system. Grant it, it could use a little bass or I need to figure it out, but it's functional. Computer comes equipped with a back up drivers disk and manuals.
This was my first major electronics purchase through Amazon in terms of computers and televisions. I was skeptical at first because I had been used to purchasing other brands such as Compaq, HP, Dell, and Acer. I will have to say I'm initially impressed with this brand at the moment. Clean and simple design, very light weight is the monitor/base. The only flaw at the moment is that I need to calibrate the stylus so I can use the touch screen aspect. Other wise you can't beat the $577 price for this unless you go smaller on the screen.

HP Pavilion p6720f PC (Black) Review

I had it for about a month, using it every day. I left it on at times and I did several tests to make sure everything worked. I'll break it down with my experience, maybe it'll help some people out.*Processor: Phenom x4 840T
This is a newer AMD processor, an OEM only processor. So far it has handled everything I've thrown at it. I can run multiple things a once without a slowdown. It's not silent, I always hear the faint fan sound, but it's not loud. I love this processor! I get a 7.3 in the Windows Experience Index.
*Hard Drive: Hitachi HDS721010CLA332
1 Terabytes is more than enough for me. Lots of space! I read reviews online about this hard drive, and they have been on the positive side. I am happy HP used a good hard drive. The sound is on the lower end, not a loud hard drive at all. It gives me a 5.9 in the Windows Experience Index.
*Optical Drive: Samsung TS-H65SR
I could not find any reviews about this DVD drive. It is a basic drive on the cheap end. It is not noisy at all, except for when installing programs or running at top speed, which is normal. I have experienced bad DVD drives before from Dell that sounded like a helicopter when they were in use, and that is no exaggeration! So I am happy to recieve a "normal" DVD drive. Programs install faster than on my older XP computer, I haven't done too much burning yet, but speed times are equally good.
*Memory: 6 gigabytes
I wasn't able to see the maker of the memory. 6 gigabytes is more than enough for me. It gives me a 7.4 in the Windows Experience Index.
*Wireless Lan Card: Ralink
I won't be using the wireless at all for the moment. I did test the Ralink lan card out, and it worked like it should. An antenna is also included. I can't speak for using it for long periods of time.
*Power Supply: 250 Watts
This is a very cheap low wattage power supply. If you want to add more drives or a video card, you'll want to get a new power supply. It makes a low buzzing sound when it's fan is running on low, but you can only hear it if you are close to the computer. At full speed the fan sounds normal.
*Integrated Video: Radeon 4200
Not very good. While it's good for basic usage, you'll need a new video card if you want to do anything involving high detailed graphics. This thing barely runs graphics from 5 years ago. Graphics and Gaming were low in the Windows Experience Index, I only got a 4.3 and 5.4 on it.
*Keyboard and Mouse: HP
Both are wired and are the basic cheap kind. The keyboard is the new flat style, with the keys being more flat than sticking out like on the old keyboards. The optical mouse is a regular 2 button with a wheel. I prefer the old keyboards, but these both are just fine for basic use. I do like the look of the mouse, looks stylish!
*Software included:
People usually call extra programs installed with new computers "bloatware", it usually involves programs most people don't want. This does have some programs already installed, but it is not much at all. Only a few e-readers, 60 days free of Norton, Cyberlink to help you burn disc's, and a few extra games from Wildtagent.
If any of the programs are not wanted, they can be uninstalled within a few minutes, then can be forgotten about. They are however very good for a new computer user.
I have to mention the software HP included. I have been using Windows since Windows 95, and I have never, not once, ever used the "Help and Support" that's been included with Windows. However, looking at this one, it is truly wonderful how they have it. They have a link that goes directly to the product page on their web site with lots of useful details, I can run some diagnostic tests on the computer, and it has other useful tools and information. I really like the programs HP has included, I find them very useful.~Note!
You can only create 1 set of recovery discs. Make sure to do it soon after you first turn on your computer. Once you create them, store them in a safe place. You can always order them from HP too if it's ever needed. I'd rather get a set of discs with the computer like they use to come with, but to be honest, I really don't mind creating a set like this.~UPGRADES!
I bought a power supply and video card seperately to go with this computer. I got this power supply OCZ OCZ500MXSP ModXStream Pro 500 Watt Power Supply and this video card Sapphire Radeon HD5770 Vapor-X 1 GB DDR5 2DVI/HDMI/DisplayPort PCI-Express Video Card 100283VX-2L.
Installing them both was very easy. HP is great when it comes to having user friendliness in adding more components to the computer, I just discovered this and I love it. They have many guides and pictures on their web site showing how to add new hardware, even in the case it has little diagrams to show you how to remove something. If I compare removing a power supply from this HP, and from a new Dell, HP wins big! I love how the case is designed too, much nicer than the typcial computer cases you'd find today.
After adding the new video card, my Windows Experience Index in the graphics section jumped up from 4.3 and 5.4, to 7.4. A big jump! A video card was definitly needed for me.With my new power supply and video card added to the computer, I am very happy with this purchase. Gateway FX6831-03 Desktop PC (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)Like many, I wanted to avoid the whole Vista fiasco, so the Gateway FX6831-03 is my first new computer in seven years.
You only have to look at the specs: a powerful I7-860 processor coupled with a ATI5850 video card and an insane 16 gig of DDR3 memory to know this is a blazing fast machine at a modest price, so I'm going to talk about the out of the box stuff. I ordered the Gateway FX6831-03 desktop PC from Amazon via standard shipping and it arrived in good shape from J&R Music and Electronics in less than a week.
First, I opened it up to look inside. The case is crummy sheet-metal with screws, but the layout looks solid with no glaring problems and a big power supply (I've uploaded some photos into the "customer image" section). It has front-loading bays to add two more hard drives to its internal 1.5 TB drive. So far I've added a 1 TB Hitachi SATA drive to handle just HD video files. Setup was a bit tricky--I was expecting a simple plug and play, but I had to go into the device manager and format the new drive before it would show up. It's all good now.
The interior is tight because of the "cooling tower" on the CPU and the massive video card. Wedging in additional PC cards would be tough, though I would be hard pressed to think of what else to add! It has two disk drives--one CD/DVD burner and one CD/DVD/Blu-ray player; I replaced the CD/DVD burner with a Pioneer 205 Blu-ray/CD/DVD burner. I also supplemented its single case fan with two additional fans out of an excess of caution in this powerful machine.
The exterior is really sweet with red glowing racing stripes, an extremely fast multi-card reader and LOTS of USB ports (10!), FireWire, HDMI and more. You can nestle your iPod or MP3 player on a little indented platform on top, right next to two USB ports.
Turning on the Gateway FX6831-03 was a pleasant surprise. First there was a pretty good "whir" sound, then it settled down to dead quiet. I had to double-check that the fans were going! It is also quite energy efficient: my computer, modem/router/WiFi and 24" LCD monitor only use 108 watts while performing most tasks.
The setup was a snap. I don't know which was better: the new machine or the 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium. In any case, unlike my previous Windows machines, I was able to get on line in seconds instead of wasting half a day fiddling with settings.
Unfortunately, the computer has no setup disks, and the setup instructions were of the pathetic "don't use this machine in the shower" sort. After removing some bloatware and downloading about 50 updates (true!) I loaded and tweaked dozens of personal programs. Note: Windows 7 doesn't use Outlook Express--it uses Windows Live Mail. Also, Windows has a nice (free!) anti-virus Microsoft Security Essentials program that won't bog down the system. Simple stuff, sure, but it was new to me and much appreciated. Rebooting only takes about 60 seconds.
You can also use Windows Easy Transfer between your new and old machine, but it I couldn't make it work via USB cable. I had to use an external hard drive. It took several hours and is a bit buggy. Also, start planning on moving all your e-mails and e-mail addresses to your new machine.
Most of my old (some very old) programs work on the Gateway FX6831-03. High end products like Photoshop CS5, Photomechanic, Pinnacle Studio HD and games like Supreme Commander 2, Dragon Age and Age of Empires III are amazingly fast even at highest resolution! For instance, Photoshop CS5 loads in six seconds! I've only had it a few months, but this machine is everything I could possibly want. Note of warning: Gateway is reported to have HORRIBLE customer support, but I figured it would be worth the risk. If I ever have a problem, I'll update this review.

Cambridge MicroWorks II Computer Speaker System Review

But, they were the Advent company way back in the 70s, and I bought some Advent bookshelf speakers in 1976, which I still own. I purchased a cheaper multimedia speaker system from Cambridge Soundworks, and I got some good sound for the money. So I thought I couldn't go wrong with the MicroWorks II.
I was not disappointed. The midrange and highs are good. Singing voices, acoustic guitars, amplified guitars, distorted guitars, etc., have excellent clarity. Other instruments, too, have such presence and clarity. And the bass is solid enough that you can feel it, without that booming effect. I want to hear actual, clean bass, not a rumble of noise. On cymbals, well, it's not like having real cymbals in the room (what speakers can do that for this price?) but still, I highly recommend these speakers!! For the money, I'm quite pleased.

HP Pavilion Slimline S3700F Desktop PC Review

This review refers to the HP Pavilion Slimline S3720F Desktop PC (2.5 GHz Intel Pentium Dual-Core Desktop E5200 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB Hard Drive, DVD Drive,Vista Premium).
The HP Slimline S3720F is an excellent slim form-factor pc with a few limitations. I needed another small sized PC at my engineering lab, so I purchased the S3720F. Typically I build my own machines, so I was quite impressed when I purchased this model, assuming one understands its limitations.
The HP Slimline S3720F runs Intel's Dual Core E5200 processor (mid-range processor line). Note that this is not Intel's "Core 2 Duo" line (the high-range which has a faster front-side bus). Regardless in conjunction with a healthy 4 gb of RAM, there is enough horsepower to run most of my engineering applications, which can be quite intensive. The 500 GB harddrive is adequate, though I see myself needing more storage space in the future (easily remedied with an external HDD).
The S3720F runs Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack1. Contrary to the negative sentiment against Windows Vista, I have to clarify that Windows Vista SP1 is very functional. I use numerous operating systems including, various Linux packages, OS X (Mac), Windows XP, even Windows 7 Beta. So after uninstalling some "bloat-ware" and removing some unneeded startup programs (msconfig), the S3720F runs Vista like a dream. Some slowdown occurs when one uses some Aero features (graphic-intensive features). But aside from that, it is surprisingly smooth. I can load firefox pages in seconds, run Matlab, Itunes, and an array of other programs simultaneously with no noticeable slowdown.
A very important exception to note is that this computer comes with a 64-bit Windows OS. This may cause some incompatibility issues with some 32-bit software. This is arguably of no fault of the OS in its own, but rather that the software was not designed to run on a 64-bit OS. Aside from these issues, once you optimize the system, the performance is much better than one would expect.
The physical design of the system borrows from the concept of minimalism. In the front, there are two USB ports, a covered CD/DVD tray, a HP pocket media drive bay, and the many different memory cards ports. The backside houses the standard ports, with no exceptional features. Note that the video-out to the monitor is VGA and NOT DVI or HDMI. Overall there is some great aesthetic appeal, and one would not be embarrassed to stash this PC in an entertainment center. Be sure to place it in an area that is well ventilated (as with most to all PCs).
Overall, I am very pleased with the overall package for the price. Whether you use it for common office tasks, light engineering work, or a living-room media center (though only one VGA-out is limiting), the HP Slimline performs its tasks admirably.

The scale ranges from 1.0 (poor performance) to 5.9 (excellent performance). This tool can be found by right-clicking on "My computer" and scroll to properties. For the HP Slimline S3720F here are the results:

The overall score is 3/6 which would suggest an average score. However, the "Overall Score" is based on the lowest subscore, which is the Gaming Graphics. Otherwise, this machine scored exceptionally well in the processor, memory, and harddisk subtests. So in conclusion, unless you plan on using this machine for heavy gaming, or artwork/graphic applications, the S3720F is an exceptional value computer.

(More customer reviews)Ordered this last week because I needed a really cheap back up PC. You get the slim tower, power plug, usb keyboard and optical mouse. Windows xp is pre-installed without service pack 2 and my order came with a dvd/cd player installed but no rewriter. All i can say is that it works. If you're looking for a basic pc to just browse the net and download music and videos(no hd) then it's fine. Obviously you'll want to upgrade the ram, video card, and hard drive if you plan on making this your main pc but for something cheap to hop online and do some stuff it's great. While the 2.8 pentium 4 processor is ancient it gets the job done for basic tasks. I'm still amazed that this only cost $65 before shipping. I've seen people on craigslist selling old models like this for $100 and more.

Gateway SX2850-01 Desktop (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I wanted to purchase a small PC for my home theater system and was initially leaning toward the e-machines "Mini-e." However, I saw that it had issues with flash and Hulu. I then came across the Gateway SX2840 which got rave reviews from cnet and the like. It seemed to have everything I wanted except for a wireless card. I figured hey, I can just buy one and stick it in the machine, but then I came across the SX2850 and voila! It had one in it. The system itself works great. It's fast and handles anything thrown at it, very quiet too. I have it hooked up to a Panasonic 1080p G25 plasma via HDMI and looks great. Much better watching Hulu on a large TV than a small monitor. I also have it connected to my Windows Home Group and stream movies and content from my Desktop to this PC wirelessly and have no issues (I have a Dual Band "N" router). I would have given this 5 stars if it wasn't for one small flaw.
They chinced on the onboard sound. At first glance the sx2840 and sx2850 looked identical (2850 had a slight upgrade in the processor, downgrade in RAM). So I ordered the 2850. Didn't realize until I got it that it doesn't have an Optical Out (toslink/spdif), the 2840 does. I can't fathom why they would have omitted it. Oh well, my oversight I guess. So I had to hook up analog cables to the Multi Channel Input of my receiver. Speakers test fine in Windows 7 but, the sound is horrible with absolutely no bass when playing video/audio files. I found out later that the LFE connection to the subwoofer doesn't really like analog. I tried increasing the gain in Windows and my receiver as well as the physical knob on the sub and nothing worked. The problem with increasing the gain in the receiver is it will blow out my sub when I switch over to Cable or PS3 (both using optical). So not a good solution. Moral of the story, if you want to use this for home theater and want the best sound you'll probably need to buy a low-profile sound card with optical out. Unless you can figure out how to make it work. If you do, feel free to drop a comment and let me know. Thanks!
***UPDATE: 15 Aug 10***
I purchased the ASUS Xonar DX 7.1 Channels PCI Express Interface Sound Card for the optical out and threw it in this machine. Once I got it working the sound is great. Now I get true surround sound and deep bass watching digital movies and internet content. There are a few things to note when ordering this sound card. First, it doesn't come with a manual. It comes with a bare bones installation guide which is not that helpful. Second, it also requires external power and they provide an old Molex style connector. The Gateway SX2850 HDD and DVD drive run off SATA power connections and the power supply has no spare power cables. You have to buy a SATA extension with extra Molex connector from NewEgg (Radio Shack and Best Buy do not carry them). To cut a long story short, the card is not PnP and does not auto-detect which ports you're using. You have to use the interface software that comes with the card to make adjustments (Windows 7 is futile). I spent a few hours before I figured out you have to check mark the s/pdif box in the packaged software.

(More customer reviews)I was running Windows 2000 on my old Dell Precision Workstation; that I purchased back in 2001. I had upgraded it as far as it would go (RAM wise). It was working OK; but I had been noticing that more and more software offerings, were not including W2K in their list of OS they were certified to work with. My dilemma; do I try and upgrade my existing computer to Windows XP or newer OS, or do I replace my machine??
I have had experiences in the past with trying to upgrade to a newer OS and all have had disastrous results!! I live on a very limited income, so a new machine was out of the question. Enter Amazon and their amazing deals!!
I found this refurbished machine, with a "fresh version" of Windows XP Professional; Service Pack 3 (meaning, no annoying garbage advertisement software that you get when you order a new machine from whomever and can never seem to totally get rid of!). It had everything I wanted, 2GB of RAM and a 250GB hard-drive. I think the motherboard speed must be a lot faster than the old machine. This one runs way faster than the old and I was able to move everything from the old to the new with a transfer program.
I would definitely recommend this vendor. The machine was very well packed and arrived very quickly. It did not come with a CD burner, so I wanted to take the one from my old machine and install in this one. The case on the replacement machine has a "rounded" trim piece on the front and I couldn't find one anywhere on the net, so I e-mailed the vendor to see if they knew where I could get one. Immediately they e-mailed me back to see if I could take a photo of what I was describing. I did and she e-mailed me back photos of what they had and told me they would ship it to me for free. Now that's excellent customer service!!

(More customer reviews)This computer is so small and fast its just great. I mainly got it so I could play the Sims 3 and star craft 2 and its working really well. I spent a very long time researching all of the compact acer computers (because they are the best computers) and this one is the best. The built in speakers aren't amazing but decent and I bought the Logitech S220 2.1 Speaker System with Sub-woofer anyway which work really smoothly with this computer. so if you only want a computer for work this is more than good enough, if you want one for gaming this is the best for under 850$ and anything that cost more than that just has LED lights and easier access to ram and that sort of thing.
other info- Windows 7 is the best of all windows
- monitor is clear and bright
- and The computer really is Compact (1/3rd of what your use to to be exact).

(More customer reviews)I shopped for a couple of months to find a computer that fit my price and spec requirements. I wanted plenty of RAM for photo editing and also be expandable for the future. I like that HP builds computers that are proven to be reliable and as trouble free as possible. Windows 7 took some getting used to, but the more I use it the more I like it. I use a host of peripherals and this model has 8 USB ports. I am not a natural at computer technology and yet I can navigate this computer pretty handily. This computer gives me lots of bang for my buck.
