(More customer reviews)I have this TV paired up to a Samsung HD-953 DVI DVD player and the picture is terrific. This television is a beast, so make sure you do your measurements. It's a piece of furniture in its' own right. The set up is easy, and there are many, many useful inputs on the back. USE the DVI and you will achieve an excellent picture. This is a digital HDTV television, so the hardware interfaces much more positively with a digital input. I had one bit of trouble with the door on the bottom of the cabinet, and Samsung sent me the WHOLE door. I've had terrific experiences with their products in general. You cannot buy more television for this price.

Samsung HL-S5086W 50-Inch DLP HDTV Review

(More customer reviews)I have had this TV for the last 2 months and it has been fantastic. Sure you could get the 1080P model instead, which I will admit does have better picture but you'd end up paying at least $500 more for it. Given the ever dropping prices of these kinds of TV's I'd rather save that money and use it in a few years to upgrade when I have the room for something bigger and better.
I had extensively compared this model to the Toshiba 50HM66 and in stores I will say the Toshiba did look a bit better. Don't let yourself be fooled though, for some reason Toshiba always seems to do the best job of making their TV's look good right out of the box while Samsungs require some adjustments to get the best picture. Once you do all of this they will look very similar in regards to picture quality.
In regards to the previous poster I will assume that he doesn't have the TV nor has done any research on it. This TV most definetly has a VGA input (although the competing Toshiba doesn't). Also you have been missinformed in regards to using HDMI to connect a computer. I have had a high end media center pc connected to my Samsung HL-S5086W using a DVI to HDMI cable and the picture is outstanding. Pretty much any computer with DVI out on the video card can be connected to this TV using a DVI to HDMI cable which can be picked up for ten dollars online, no other equipment needed.
Overall I am very happy with this purchase and would completly recommend this TV to anyone on the market for an HDTV on a budget.

(More customer reviews)Like the previous review says, your jaw will drop. The picture on this TV is clear, bright and lifelike, and the images are eye-popping. DVD's are amazing, even in 480P. I'm using the DirecTV HD TiVo as my satellite source, and an over-the-air antenna for local HD channels. DirecTV's HD choices are limited, but the picture on those (compressed) channels is beautiful. But the piece-de-resistance is the non-compressed local HDTV broadcasts. Just amazing. Our local CBS affiliate does their news in HD, and it makes the boring local news riveting just for the picture. Getting strong signals from an antenna can be challenging, but it's worth it if you can do it.
The set has more options than you'll ever need, but I particularly like the surround-sound simulation mode that plays a simulated 5.1 image over the set's 2 speakers. It actually creates sounds that seems to come from behind you. Of course, you can hook it up to your home theater for the real thing (over an optical connection).
I have noticed no rainbow effects that some say appear on DLP's, and the picture is plenty bright, even in my room that has a wall of windows behind me and skylights above me.
In short, if you can afford this TV, you shouldn't hestitate to buy it. Amazon has a great sale on it now (July 2005), so it's even less painful. Besides, amortize it over the 10-15 years you'll enjoy this TV, and it's a bargain.

(More customer reviews)We bought ours 5 years ago. If you are into sports and nature TV you can't beat this. You are right on the field or rink with the players or the wildlife. The one thing I would caution about is that your TV viewing will increase. High Definition makes everything you watch an experience and the size definitely only enhances it. You do need to have 12 to 15 feet minimum of room between your seating and the set to really enjoy this. A room 18 to 20 feet in depth is ideal. A good surround system also makes a world of difference as most high def is also broadcast in 5.1 surround. You can pack a lot of people around this TV and with the Olympics coming up we expect to be sharing our house a lot. In 5 years we have not ever thought of replacing this set as the quality has not diminished.

The set's AV NET interface simplifies both onscreen control and operation of other system components such as DVD players, VCRs, and audio/video receivers.
