Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD4650 1 GB AGP Video Card GV-R465D2-1GI Review

I bought one of these cards to put into an old Pentium 4 system I am refurbing for 2 of my grandsons (ages 7&5). In a setup with a P4 2.67Ghz, 2Gb ram, 120Gb hard drive, this card lets Windows 7 run all the Aero features. May not run the latest games at high settings but will handle a lot of them OK when set to lower graphic settings in the games.
No issues installing the driver, just downloaded the current Hotfix driver from AMD's site (they own ATI), ran the install and 1 reboot later all is well.
Specs call for a 400 watt power supply in your system to run the card well (remember to plug a power connector into the card or it'll crash all the time). This one has a 500 watt in it so I can't comment on how it works with lower wattage PSU's.
These are great cards but AGP is a dead slot technology so these cards will be hard to find soon.
Sam

The XFX Radeon 4650 AGP video card will extend the life of your AGP-based system until you have enough money to upgrade to a PCIe-2.0 based system. You will need this card if you plan to play Starcraft 2 in an AGP-based system. With this card, I was able to play the Starcraft 2 Beta in 2vs2 games at [...] at 1440X900X32 bits setting with High Texture, High Shadows, High Lighting, High Shadow, High Terrain, and High Model qualities. However make sure that fuctions controleld by your CPU in Starcraft 2 are set to low like Reflections Off, Effects Low, Physics LOw and Unit Portraits 2D. In contrast, my old Nvidia GeForce 7800 card could only play Starcraft 2 Beta at its very lowest settings. Take note that I play Starcraft 2 with all sounds off.
Driver installation of the Radeon 4650 AGP is a pain in a Windows XP-based system. You will need to download the latest Catalyst AGP Hotfix drivers, unzip it and manually install the driver by pointing Windows XP to the driver. You do this by selecting the following steps:
1. " Install From A List Of A Specific Location (advanced)"
2. "Dont Search I will select the Driver To Install"
3. "Have Disk"
4. "Install From Disk Disk" window select "Browse"
5. Locate the driver in ATI/Support/10_5_agp_hotfix_xp32_dd_ccc/Packages/Drivers/Display/XP_INF/CX_99999 (Please note that this is for the Catalyst Hotfix AGP 10.5 version)
6. Select CX_99999 and presto! Windows XP wqill install the ATI Radeon 4650 AGP driver
7. Before pressing reboot disable your soundcard (you do this in the device manager of the Windows XP control panel) or else Windows XP will hang at the loading screen during the reboot

I needed an AGP card for my old HP 2.4 Gigahertz desktop that would be used to show flash videos on my HD Toshiba television that has an HDMI connection. I was leery that it would work, but I plugged in the cables and set the tv to HDMI input and on the screen appeared my desktop! I adjusted desktop size and then also installed the audio drivers for this card and I had both HD video and sound! I could not be happier with this product. My old computer is working fine in its new role with this upgrade. Thank you HIS and Amazon for teaming up. And it has a rebate also!

ATI Radeon X1600 Pro 512 MB AGP Review

Myriads of reviews on the web will tell you about this card's so-so 3D acceleration, and I must agree ... it's not that impressive when you tried last year's model (X800) and noticed that it can perform faster and smoother. But everybody seems to ignore ATI's claims that this card renders much clearer pictures and text, vibrant colors and even smoother video than its predecessors ... all of these are quite true. I use my PC for work 90% of the time and play the occasional game or watch the occasional DVD. Still, because of image quality, I found this a good investment. I would have preferred one of these super-sharp Matrox cards if I NEVER payed any games, but hey ...
The bad: a) this gets very very hot, even with the large fan in my original ATI (I would not even think about getting some of the copy cards with even less cooling), so I wonder how long it will last me, b) whenever the chip's acceleration is working very hard, I hear screeching noises in my Audigy soundcard.

This is a tried and true direct x 10 320 streaming processor smart/ low power consumption card (75 Watts max) from ati. It's had a few years for all the bugs to surface and be dealt with so it's a safe bet to install with the latest drivers from the ati website. I bought 2 of these and they both work fantastic! They went into an HP a6857c desktop computer. The original is now the spare and that one was running for over a month and even survived an open case 3 foot computer drop onto a fairly hard carpeted surface. I originally installed the drivers using the VGA connection so there would be no conflict with my onboard sound. I then swithced over to the HDMI connection and that operation went flawlessly. Knowing what I know now I would have downloaded the drivers and the CCC first, uninstalled my accelerated integrated graphic drivers second, put the card in and then installed the drivers and ccc I had already downloaded. That way the card won't be spinning it's wheels waiting an inordinate amount of time for it's drivers. I could have gotten by on the stock 300 Watt Power Supply with this card but installed a Corsair 400 Watt psu anyway. These are dream cards with smart power consumption and no external power connection. That means my computer is only drawing 66.3 Watts as I type this but when I play Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 2008 the power consumption goes up to 120 Watts. It's similar for Deer Drive. You don't get that with the old style external plug in graphic cards. They would cause your computer to use significant more power at all times ! This card has something like 300 5 star reviews on Newegg so it's the nearest thing to a sure bet you're gonna get for a graphics card. When you try to print the HIS rebate form make sure you match up the upc code to the model code because it seems each model has more than one upc code and if you get it wrong the form will not print but it won't tell you why. I thought there was something wrong with my printer until I finally figured it out. You'll get an option for a 1 week rebate but it will cost you 10%. Rebates twenty dollars and more are issued on debit cards but the 10 dollar rebate is a check issue and 8-10 weeks out if you don't take the instant option. Oh yeah the fan on this thing requires an adjacent open slot because it exhausts out the back of your case. For all but hard core gamers with gaming rigs(usually high wattage) this card is the perfect solution. It rates 5.7 on the Windows Vista Experience Index.
