The packaged software, WinFast PVR, and WinFast FM, is geared at watching TV or listening to FM. The recording capabilities within these applications are a bit strange, but they do work. The documentation of these apps is a bit sketchy. You can do "time shifting", capture video to hard disc, or even direct to DVD. BUT, I found, that even though playing back the video in WinFast PVR gives perfectly synchronized audio, writing it to DVD caused the audio to get out of sync. I tried this two different ways: using "Direct Burn" (which would have been GREAT had it worked), and by using (my own) Sonic RecordNow to create a DVD from the captured video. Both had sync problems.
What to do? I installed the (bundled!) ULEAD Video Studio 8.0 SE. It captures video from the card, and can write DVDs with the audio in perfect sync. The ULEAD software is VERY easy to use (barely needs documentation), and gets the job done right. It is an elegant and capable video editor, which makes this entire package very worthwhile.
The unit seems nicely built. It is prettier than it has to be, with the "eye" for the remote on the single curved edge (the power button is on the opposite edge). My only qualm is that the USB cable which plugs into it cannot plug FULLY into it, so the plug falls out very easily. But I think I can scrape away some plastic to make it fit better.
The unit also is a USB hub! In OFF mode, it is just a USB hub. But when you turn it on (via a button on the back edge) two blue LEDs (under orange lenses -- go figure) glow brightly, and the computer sees it as a video capture device. The device gets quite warm when turned on. I'd ALMOST recommend you warm your coffee with it.
A good little box. I'm looking forward to using it to move my video tapes to DVD.
