For the longest time I had been a Creative user, up until my Audigy 2, which I compared to my onboard sound and was actually impressed with the onboard, not to mention the terrible support for Creative in the last few years, but I'll skip that.
The Xonar D1 is an extremely well performing card. This is especially true for music. I have a very broad taste in music, from classical, jazz, rockabilly, ska, hip-hop, indie, whatever (no country) and everything sounds amazing. It's indescribable, but it's just like this card is able to convey just that much more that my Audigy, and the onboard couldn't. Not to mention the Dolby headphone setting. It's sometimes very easy to forget I have my cans on. It handles video and gaming well too, but music is its biggest highlight. The control center has a lot of features, a great sampling rate, and SNR. My only complaint is the I/O panel. There is an optical out, and a line in, shared jack. Other than that, I'm 100% satisfied with the card.
I use it in Win 7, but with the Vista x64 drivers, works no problem. It also works fine in Fedora 12 x86_64. Alsa picks it right up. It would be nice if there were more software support, but it works well enough as is.
