Folks,
I have tried two of this model card and found the analog performance was consistently poor on both. The bottom line is that there is a low level whine on the mic and line inputs. Running with very high gain helps to alleviate this condition, but it never fully goes away. If you are using the card only to play music from files or CD/DVD then you will probably be happy with the purchase. If you are looking to reproduce and record audio from the analog inputs then you will be disappointed.
There are very few low profile cards out there. There are two that I know of. One is the Soundwave 5.1 from SIIG, and the other is the Soundblaster Audigy SE SB0570 from Creative. Either of these is vastly superior for analog reproduction and are very low noise. I have tried both of these cards in the same system as the Startech card and there was no whine or noise noted.
