The instructions are brief, tells you to turn everything off first. I did as it stated and had trouble at first. I connected a cable company dvr unit to it and the trick with the cable company units is when the power is turned off, they really are not off. If you do connect to a cable box, cold-boot your cable box, what I mean is unplug it for 30 seconds or so then hook up your hdmi splitter and then power the cable box back on, that way it resets itself and then the splitter will sync with the cable box.
I set this up in order to view recorded programs from the cable dvr on another tv located in another room. I have 35 feet of in-wall hdmi cabling that I installed to do so and this unit has enough power to run the long distance. The picture reception is excellent. I see no degradation in picture quality. I get HD programming too.
When I had trouble initially, I called Iogear's technical support and was transferred to a different department as the technician stated that a different department handled the support for this unit. I was put on indefinite hold by them and finally gave up on getting through to someone else.
After a few trial and error steps, I figured it out by myself. I would have rated it 5 stars had I not had the initial trouble and the lack of help from Iogear's support.
