(More customer reviews)So you keep hearing things about how integrated sound is not as good as discrete sound cards or that integrated sound is actually just as great as discrete sound cards. And I used to believe that. You know, coming from the 90s from the AC'97 sound spec to HD audio a lot of improvements have been made since then and I was quite content with my ALC888S integrated audio... for awhile, but it started to create some interference from the mic which was very annoying. I replaced the motherboard and got stuck with a VIA VT1708S and I thought it sounded pretty good. A bit cleaner than the Realtek ALC888S.
So I spotted this deal and thought, "Why not?" I wanted to see if the sound card myth is true. After all people keep saying that if I don't game and just want to listen to music or TV shows, then I should pass up on a sound card. Well, I wanted a good sound card not for my gaming but to listen to music the way it was intended- or at least a bit cleaner than what integrated could give me if that was even true at all. So I got this to see if the myths were true at all.
At first because I was super tired, I went, "Well this doesn't sound bad at least, but it doesn't sound any better by leaps and bounds." ... the only immediate improvement I could tell was that when I was playing games, I could hear people speaking very clearly but that's about all the improvement that I noticed.
Then... I slept, and now that I'm not tired I switched off between the integrated VIA sound and this ASUS sound card. And I cannot tell you how much BETTER the ASUS card sounds. It's really one of those things where you don't know that you've lost something until you've really lost it. This little card spits out audio that's so much cleaner and you really won't hear the difference unless you get this. Integrated just sounds so flat and muddy now. The vocals for songs just get drowned out by integrated ... that is the first thing you will notice.
An afterword... I use this with Logitech X-540 speakers. So what you also heard about using low quality speakers and you won't notice a difference... well for audiophiles this "low quality" surround sound set I can hear the difference with.
