I wanted a phone that had a large physical keyboard for writing mobile e-mail when I am away from my computer...but I did not want to pay Blackberry prices.
The Sanyo Incognito from Boost Mobile has a terrific, and very large physical keyboard, and Boost Mobile provides unlimited phone calls, unlimited internet, unlimited texting, and unlimited e-mail for $50 a month, plus $5 Texas sales tax...$55 total. Every six months, Boost cuts the price by $5, so after 18 months, my total monthly bill will be $35 for unlimited everything.
The Incognito is the perfect phone for writing e-mails. It opens up into a "mini" netbook, with a physical keyboard that is easy to use for fast typing. When opened, it works well as a speaker phone. I can use the voice recognition app to dial numbers or dial by speaking a name in my contact list.
I can easily read even lengthy e-mails on the Incognito's screen. The electric company sends me e-mails with graphs of my hourly electrical use. The Incognito can open those e-mails as a web page so that I can see the graphs. However, the Incognito does not have the ability to open a PDF attachment to an e-mail.
The included web brower is very basic, so I downloaded the more advanced Opera 5 mini web browser and installed it as a "Favorite" on my apps page. It plays videos from YouTube, but not from websites that use Adobe Flash (99% of the world likes Adobe Flash, but not Apple or Sanyo).
I have been able to view short (under a minute) videos from the New York Times, but attempting to download longer videos from the New York Times results in getting an error message. The Times is using different software than YouTube.
The "native" Sanyo web browser is rather clunky, but it allows adding a list of favorite web sites. So, if I don't want to take a few seconds to open the Opera web browser, I can just click on a site on my list of favorites.
The camera is very basic, and requires that the phone be opened to its mini-computer shape before taking a photo. The lens is positioned exactly where your fingers will be. All in all, don't bother trying to use the camera.
You can install a mini-SD card of up to 16gb to hold music transferred from your computer or to hold photos. There is no easy way to download music wirelessly...I suspect it may be impossible. I was unable to find a way to connect to any internet radio site, such as Pandora or LastFM.
When closed, the phone is dialed from an invisible touchscreen on the front cover. To make a call or answer a call, you release the screen lock and the screen lights up to display the numbers on a touch screen. The numbers vibrate to confirm your touch...a feature I turned off to save the battery.
The first week or two, it is irritating to have to remember to release the screen lock to answer a call. Eventually, releasing the lock will become more reflexive. The screen lock IS useful...no accidental dialing.
The Boost/Sprint signal has been strong, even indoors, in the Houston, Texas area. Voice quality is good through the earpiece and the speaker phone. When holding the phone to your ear, you must keep the lower part of the phone from touching your cheek or you can touch the disconnect button. You can prevent accidental disconnects by using the phone's menu to re-lock the screen automatically after a call is connected.
I recharge the battery every other night. If you like to watch You Tube videos, you will need to recharge every night.
If your primary use for a cell phone is mobile e-mail and you want a large physical kieyboard, the Sanyo Incognito from Boost is a good lower cost alternative to a Blackberry.
Amazon.com is the best place to buy accessories for the Incognito. I was able to buy the ORIGINAL Sanyo wall charger and a spare battery made by Sanyo for 75% less than the Sprint store. And, I found a plastic phone "protector" that snaps around the lid of the phone and over its back to protect it from nicks and scractches. It has a slightly "sticky" feel, which makes it easier to get a secure grip on the phone.
