(More customer reviews)Little known secret - the Soundwave PCI uses the C-Media chipset. Go to Google Code and search for Dogbert's "cmediadrivers". About 30 USD for this card, plus Dogbert's free drivers, and you can equip your PC/HTPC to send out a bit-perfect digital stream to your home theatre receiver or external DAC.
I'm using an old IBM Pentium 4, WinXP SP3, Ventis MediaMonkey 3... all CDs are ripped lossless with FLAC. Bitperfect output via Dogbert's drivers to my external reclocker and DAC over S-PDIF coaxial output from the Soundwave.
I can't comment on the analog outputs of this card, as I'm not using them... but the digital output with the cmediadrivers rivals my Musical Fidelity A308CD - a slightly dated but very solid CD transport/DAC.
Slowly ripping all of my CDs to this server as FLAC. There are some impressive media server solutions out there - Sonus, Sooloo, et al. But why spend $10k when I did the same for less than $500? I was about five seconds away from springing for a Slim Devices Transporter as an interim step to a Sooloo... when Dogbert and the Soundwave saved my wallet! Cheers man and thanks! :-)
